2024 QB Watch…

‘24 is a wash, wasting one of our precious few picks on a project QB would be foolish unless the new coach has some insight that makes them absolutely certain the kid will be a stud. Load up on OL and playmakers on offense as best we can, then if Bryce doesn’t exponentially improve look to ‘25 to draft our new QB with our top few pick. And that’s why these huge trades don’t “set a team back ten years” and the other such bs hyperbole people like to spew.  Even trading two firsts and two seconds plus a good WR for a colossal bust would only set us back two, maybe three years tops.

I still believe that Bryce can be our guy, but I'd really consider taking a late round flyer on Joe Milton. The guy just has so much physical talent that if it ever all clicks for him he's gonna be elite.

Rattler and Milton are the dark horse candidates to be great next level. Milton screams to position change next level to me. He just never put it together as a QB. As an athlete, he's great, and the zip from the arm is great. But so far it hasn't translated to be a good QB. Hell, he keeps getting passed over most stops in college much less the pros. He a shorter than Logan Thomas, but might be a hell of a TE with the size and speed Milton has. By

Rattler is HS hype, good/great arm and ok athlete. He gets lots of grief for his attitude in HS and OU. If humble pie of USCe worked, he's worth a flier in 5 likely 4 as that arm is great.

Personally I would take a flier on either round 5 or 6 if they are still somehow there.

No offense, but both these guys were pretty inconsistent and Joe Milton needs a lot of refinement.  He is built like Robo QB but doesn’t play like it much of the time.

Now if we are talking last couple rounds of the draft it might be worth a shot to see if he can be something a few years from now.

Any respectable new coach will not want to come to Charlotte under the mandate or expectation that he must spend a season or two developing Bryce Young unless they feel that they have something there to develop.  Nobody is going to fall on the sword for Fitterer.  This is where Tepper is likely to become a problem.  Is he going to insist that the new coach play Bryce? Is that going to be a deal breaker if the best coach possible interviews by saying, "I will need a legit QB.?"  Or will the new coach come to Carolina because he sees this as an opportunity?  He thinks he can make Bryce legitimate?  If that approach is the only approach Tepper considers, then we are in trouble--again.  Tepper's arrogance will push him to prove to the world that he and Nicole were right, instead of admitting you were wrong.  Tepper is never the smartest person in the room, but often the loudest voice in it.

Here is another perspective:  The playoffs are also places where discarded or forgotten QBs returned to take center stage--Goff, Tua, Purdy (discarded in draft), Love (called a bust for a few years), etc. made a good showing Take a retread and don't try to draft the next QB in round 2 of any draft.  We can assume that the Bears will draft Caleb, leaving Fields available.  We can assume Washington will take Jayden Daniels or Maye, leaving Howell available (had a bad situation in DC--could be developed by the right coach/system-Rivera sucked). New England?  Not sure we want him, but Jones was playing with the pressure of BB and in the shadow of the GOAT on a team with modest levels of talent.  Give Bryce his shot, but bring in a guy and allow him to sit for a while and think.  Opportunity will present itself.

If we are not going to take a QB in this draft and 2025 looks bleak at QB, and not many teams move on from their first round QB selections after 1 season, maybe we should go after Fields, offering a 2025 third rounder or something like that. I think Fields can be coached up and the right system could help him.  He rarely had protection and only had 1 good WR part of the time.

I would add that the second tier of QBs in this draft might be as good as the first tier last year.  Nix, Penix, and McCarthy.  This might be the year to take another QB, especially if the coach is not hired based on his love for Bryce's potential.

There is gonna be huge pressure on incoming HC to make Young work. Therefore I don't see a early round QB. Our draft capital is limited.  WR, OL and TE will be higher on the list to hopefully give Young more weapons and more protection.  I could see a sneaky HC move where we take a developmental guy late but splitting reps and a competition at QB is unlikely.  2025 will be the year we either move on from Young or he has developed and makes the leap.   Yeah it could happen. Giving up after one year won't.
