It's official: Sean Payton > John Fox

What a gutsy call. Payton gave his team the spark that they needed at the time, and it propelled them to victory. John Fox has never been that imaginative and willing to take risks in the regular season, much less the Super Bowl. Payton saw that his team was falling a little flat, and decided to seize the day. He believed that he could surprise the Colts (which he did). He had enough belief in his team---specifically, his offense---that they could still overcome and win the game even if the onside attempt kick failed. He knew what his offense could do if they recovered the ball. He was taking a gamble, but was playing to the strength of his team. I wish that Fox could adapt to the flow and feel of the game like Payton, and not just follow the Foxball script. Granted, it's a little easier to make a call like that when you have Drew Brees as your QB, but Payton was responsible for Brees even being there. Oh, if Fox, could be so imaginative and bold.

Payton's move reminded of another coach's call in his first Super Bowl appearance...

When did you find that out?

Anybody who thought otherwise is more than likely a raging Panthers homer. Easily the best offensive playcaller and play designer in the league, probably the best since Bill Walsh. Quite unfortunate him and Brees had to fall in our division.

I still think we will take the division next year.

What a load of BS.

John Fox tried 2x two point conversions in the Super Bowl against the Pats. HAD we suceeded in making them, we would have won the game (we lost by 3 ya know).

If that on-side kick had been recovered by Indy, or the Colts scored before the Half (when they failed to get any points at the 1 yard line), Sean Peyton would have looked like a rookie idiot.

The difference between the two comparisons? Fox's team failed, and he got labeled as a points chaser, where Sean Payton's team managed to get lucky and make plays that have low chances of working.

I've watched Sean Payton do dumb sh!t for 4 years, which has put this team out on a limb for no good reason. This year he just happened to have the wind at his back (be it skill of the team, luck, or whatever else).

John Fox is no Football genius... but neither is Sean Payton. Luckier? Yeah.

You must have worded it wrong, because to think Sean Payton isn't a football genius is foolish. His playcalling, play designing, etc. is beautifu and he helped Drew Brees fulfill his talents. As I said before, best offensive playcaller and designer since Bill Walsh.

John Fox doesn't touch Sean Payton when it comes down to the X's and O's.

He is an exceptional playcaller and play designer but that's not what won them the game tonight. Brees had a couple of days to go through his progressions tonight which if you give to a QB as good as Brees, he will kill you. I don't think there was anything that caught the Colts off guard tonight. The Saint's execution was just better than the Colts. I remember 2 or 3 years ago when we played the Saints at home and we pretty much shut their offense down. Having the players necessary to make the offense work is the most important thing and the Saints had that in spades this year.

Well, it's all speculation; but, if they don't attempt that onside kick, then momentum is with the Colts, and Manning probably would have taken his team down and scored. This would have changed the whole complexion of the game.

Even more speculation: I believe that with the right coach (which would have led to the benching of Delhomme a lot earlier in the season), then we would have had a great possibility of giving the Saints a real run for their money this year. There were so-called experts, as well a fans, who are still miffed by Fox's decision to stick with Jake so long. This especially became more poignant with the relative success of Matt Moore. And, yes hindsight is 20/20, but Jake probably should have been pulled in our last playoff game as well. Due to Fox's ultra-conservatism and inability to adapt to the situation and flow of game, the Vince Lombardi trophy will have a difficult time landing in Charlotte. I could be wrong, but I think that it's Fox who was lucky to get to the Super Bowl, but you could see the Saints methodically working towards that end with key personnel decisions over the last few years, especially with their acquisition of arguably the best QB in the game today, Drew Brees.

Seeing the Saints win the Super Bowl has probably made me a little jealous, but more importantly---with our season going the way it did---it truly made me think of what could have been. Thanks to John Fox, we will never know.

    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
