Something has been bugging me about today. Washington is requesting GM interviews for a GM spot that isn't currently open... Are you even allowed to interview for a spot that isn't open yet?

What do you mean?  The Commanders have already told the staff they are all gone, the GM(s) are sticking around because they are "assisting" and continuing to collect a paycheck until they are out the door.

Interesting observation from the previous GM search. Of the 15 interviews mentioned in this article, a majority of the 13 external candidates ended up with GM jobs. It appears that they actually did a good job of identifying promising candidates last time around (at least based on the opinion of the rest of the league).

The breakdown:

7 GMs

  • Scott Fitterer (former GM Panthers)
  • Nick Caserio (GM Texans)
  • Kwesi Adofo-Mensah (GM Vikings)
  • Omar Khan (GM Steelers)
  • Monti Ossenfort (GM Cardinals)
  • Ryan Poles (GM Bears)
  • Joe Schoen (GM Giants)

1 Interim GM

  • Champ Kelly (Interim GM Raiders) ... part of current search

5 Additional External Candidates

  • Jeff Ireland
  • Adam Peters
  • Jerry Reese
  • Brandt Tilis ... part of current search
  • Ed Dodds (withdrew) ... part of current search

2 Internal Candidates

  • Pat Stewart (internal)
  • Samir Suleiman (internal)

They are also reported to they are trying to interview Nick Matteo from the Ravens who declined an interview last time.

I mean as of 11:14 EST Martin Mayhew is still the GM of the Washington Commanders. Can’t clubs block interviews requests for teams who don’t currently have an opening. To each their own honestly I just feel like it’s a backwards approach. If you told them they are gone let them be gone then, you hired 2 outside people to help assist with the transition.

Cowboys VP of player personnel Will McClay is now my favorite GM choice.

He's done a great job in the Cowboy front office. I think he'd be a good addition for our organization...which means he won't get the job. I fear this could be a Rooney Rule interview and nothing more.

    • Been here a while but rarely post and most of them are smartazz. Mostly lurk just so I can sound informed while hanging out drinking beer in my neighbors garage. Amusingly a Huddle level of knowledge kind of makes you a subject matter expert. Thanks for that.
    • That’s similar as saying MVP Cam is the same as rookie Cam because his mechanics didn’t change. We’re talking about production.
    • In 2025 Sam Darnold had over 1k more passing yards than Bryce Young on 1 less pass attempt. Repeat that to yourself several times and let it sink in. I absolutely love it when people come on here and invoke Sam Darnold like some gotcha. Darnold is the physical prototype for what anyone needs in a franchise QB. All the physical tools. Few people thought he would put it all together on the mental side of the position. He used to make some of the worst decisions you would ever see. At times in the past he made up for that with absurd throws and athleticism. But make no mistake whatsoever no matter how you feel about our starting QB. Bryce Young is a completely opposite conundrum. He lacks virtually any and all physical tools and athleticism and his elite processing is really mediocre at best on a good day and horrific on a bad day. These are realities people should have already been addressing instead of quadrupling down in year four.
