Canes vs Pens 7pm

Just a few thoughts...

I think Necas skates tonight. His speed thru the neutral zone is no match for the 37 year old legs of Malkin, 36 year old legs of Crosby, 31- Rust, 32- Smith, 39- Carter, 34- Ellers, etc.

Get a couple quick goals that allow Raanta to breathe a little easier and play some lock down defense against a Pens team that shoots a lot.

Lemieux earned a spot on the ice tonight, maybe to protect Necas. Wouldn't be surprised to see TDA in tonight as well with Orlov taking a night off. But, again, with Orlov's salary, he needs to play at a high level every night.

Nov 18: Canes @ Pittsburgh: Pens score in the first, Carolina gets one back in the second and goes on the score 3 in the 3rd to win 4-2. Raanta was in net and saved 26 of 28.

Dec 21: Canes @ Pittsburgh: Again, Pens score in the first, Carolina ties it in the 2nd and the Pens won in a shootout with Kochetkov in net.

All that being said, with no morning skate, the Canes may just roll with what they had Thursday night.

Since that last loss to the Pens on Dec 21, the Canes have scored 5, 5, 5, 3, 6, 6, 1 and 6 goals (37 goals in 8 games).

Ya, I’m not holding my breath for Necas. He was in no contact at practice yesterday. Not to say that he can’t jump directly from no contact to a hame but.

Also why do you think Orlov sits? I think nobody including the coaches wants TDA on the ice unless it’s the only option.

I was mistaken. I was under the impression TDA had some really good career numbers against Pittsburgh- wrong team- my mistake.

All good. I just don’t see us putting TDA in unless we have to, aka 1-2 D line. Though TDA with burns does concern me. Not so much as Slavin, Pesce or Skjei.

    • I wonder if they'd consider trading Rasheed Walker to a team that needs tackle help but missed out in the draft?
    • LOL. This is such a Panthers fan take.  Anyone who falls to us must suck because some other team didn't take them before.  We got lucky with Lemon, Thieneman, and Freeling all falling to us (honestly any of the three is a A+) but the WR and S positions are much deeper than the LT position in this draft.  We got the LT w/ the most upside at 19.  Mauigoa played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the nfl.  Spano played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the NFL due to short arms.  Blake Miller played RT in college and is not as good as Freeling.  Proctor is a true LT but his ability to handle quick edge's worries me (see Icky).  Freeling is a true LT and a gifted pass protector.  Many think he has a very high ceiling and will benefit from not having to start right away.  This is how you build a franchise.
    • After watching Cam get killed for years behind a bad Oline and having to watch the 2021 and 2023 Olines I will never complain about this team putting resources into that spot.  We got a true LT who could really push Rasheed Walker for the day 1 job. Go back and watch Iceky's draft profile from 2022 and all the talk was Ickey would be an all-pro guard in a zone blocking scheme, but he could play LT in a gap power run scheme. That's why Ickey looked really good when Wilks took over and we just started running gap run plays and just mauled people up front but under Canales we've been more of a zone running team. Ickey can survive at LT with his pass blocking but his true strength will always be his ability to just move guys in the run game and that's a skill set that's better used at guard.  Take another OT later on day 3 to learn from Moton to take over RT in a couple of years and let Walker and Freeling battle it out for the day 1 LT job then next offseason trade one of Hunt of Lewis and let Ickey move inside to guard.
