After months of speculation, things are about to ramp up on Jim Harbaugh's potential return to the NFL.

Sources say it's believed the Chargers will speak next week with Harbaugh, who has indicated to associates there's a real possibility he could leave the University of Michigan to become Los Angeles' head coach.

The Las Vegas Raiders also continue to weigh a potential pursuit of Harbaugh, who led his alma mater to its first national championship in the College Football Playoff era on Monday night. However, sources say there remains support among many in the extended Raiders family for interim coach Antonio Pierce -- including in the locker room, with All-Pro edge rusher Maxx Crosby will explore a trade request if Pierce isn't retained, according to sources.

Meanwhile, sources say negotiations are ongoing with Michigan as the school makes an effort to sign Harbaugh to a contract extension, particularly in light of other recent movement within college football.

Harbaugh to the Chargers is a match. It’s honestly the best situation for an established coach like him looking to make an impact quickly. Harbaugh took a talented but underachieving 49ers roster and made them a Super Bowl contender in literally one offseason.

Meanwhile the Raiders should view the Panthers as a cautionary tale when considering passing over a successful interim coach, as well as themselves a few years back even making the playoffs with an interim head coach. You’d think they’ve learned their lesson.

I can’t imagine Harbaugh is genuinely interested in the Panthers job with so many other more appealing openings available. Aside from the fact that David “there’s no salary cap for coaches” Tepper might pay him an insane and fully guaranteed contract.

The chargers are really cheap. No way they will pay him what he wants.

Yep, been hearing it all week (even before) on different media. They must be really really cheap. I also heard somewhere (maybe 99.9 The Fan) that the son John thinks he's some kind of football savant and that he and Harbaugh would bump heads, so it would never work.

All that being said, Harbaugh absolutely thinks that Justin Herbert is the next best thing since sliced bread according to Greeny. They had a random conversation that gravitated to QBs and Harbaugh went on for five minutes straight about what a superstar in the making that Herbert is.

The coach they just fired was being paid $4 million a year.

That has to be the lowest paid HC job out there.

    • Here is what it said about him coming out of college: Overview A three-year starter with good feet and technique, Samac could be in consideration for a move-blocking rushing attack. He is strong at the point of attack but will have limitations against NFL power. He operates with good hand placement and nimble feet and is a demon once he’s on the move as a pulling center leading the way. He’s fluid and agile in the run game, but those traits fail to do as much for him in protection. Samac punches with inside hands but can struggle to widen his protection base in order to protect his edges. He has eventual starting talent as a run blocker but needs to add more mass and improve in pass protection to get there.
    • Through 2 games cltfc has 12 shot attempts. Opponents 23 shots on target. Attack sucks, Defense definitely sucks. Kahlina is the only reason they haven't given up 14 goals in two games.
    • I met a few times--never liked him. I figured he might have had a bad day--but then realized that he must have a lot of bad days. Once he raised his voice at my son because my son did not understand a question when SS was signing his jersey.  I wanted the jersey to represent his encounter with a Panther great, not some small man with a bad attitude.  I told me son, "Forget it.  He was asking you what your name is (My son was about 7 and told me that he thought Smitty was going to write (my son's) name on the jersey.  He said "Dad, I thought he was supposed to write HIS name on the jersey, not mine."  I said, "He was personalizing it, writing it to you--like a birthday card."  He is now grown, and he has a steve smith Jersey that is framed and matted.  He keeps it is his closet.  I asked him, "Why not have that out on your wall?"  He said, "All I remember is an A-hole scribbled on my shirt.  I don't remember a legend or hero.  But he had a Jake Delhomme Jersey on his wall.  "Jake was great.  I will always remember that."  (Jake stayed and talked to us for about 5 minutes or more--GREAT guy.)
