Marvin Harrison Jr skips his media presser

I think a lot of you are comparing generational PROSPECT with generational PLAYERS. The term generational prospect gets thrown around a lot more than it should. A generational prospect checks all the boxes possible. Like Trevor Lawrence… size, arm, cognitive, pedigree, character, etc. All of the boxes were checked off making him a generational PROSPECT. That doesn’t mean he’s guaranteed to be a generational PLAYER.

On the flip side, Mahomes wasn’t considered a generational PROSPECT, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a generational PLAYER.

MHJr checks off all the boxes possible.

I'm comparing him to other recent prospects.

I mean, cool. To each their own. MHJr will still be the first non-QB prospect off the board so many people have an opinion that differs from yours.

I'm not giving my opinion. I'm pointing out how the analyst landscape views it.

Plenty have him to be the 2nd wr drafted this year behind Nabers.

they had some CB the other day telling folks he was a flat Earther and didn't think anything existed and space wasn't real.   Dude needs better people around him.  Like, listen guy, even if you believe that stuff just lie or I'll give you a line of how to not actually say anything.   Dude was going into detail about fake planets.  Teams thinking you are batpoo crazy ain't going to help you in the draft.

Randy Moss was definitely considered generational

By a handful of people perhaps.  But if he was widely believed to be a generational talent, then I think he would have been taken in the top 20 of the draft.  He wasn't even the top receiver taken in the draft.

Read the linked article.

And this one...

I'm feeling old. I'm realizing people weren't following thus stuff in real time like I was. 🙃

He was a huge story everywhere he went.

Lou Holtz said "Randy Moss was the best high school football player I've ever seen."

Bobby Bowden said "He was as good as Deion Sanders. Deion's my measuring stick for athletic ability, and this kid was just a bigger Deion."

A Cowboys scout said that he was the most gifted prospect in football history.

I honestly didn't realize people don't remember all the hype about him. He fell only because of legal issues

"By almost any standard, the wide receiver should have been a slam-dunk top 10 pick. Moss caught 96 passes for 1,820 yards and 26 touchdowns in his junior season at Marshall, finishing fourth in Heisman Trophy voting. But perceived disciplinary issues in his past — including revoked scholarship offers from Notre Dame and Florida State — sent his draft stock plummeting."

https://www.the33rdteam.com/remembering-vikings-drafting-randy-moss-25-years-later/

"Moss was low on our priority list heading into the combine. We had the No. 21 overall pick after a playoff season, and we had him rated among our top five players in the draft that also produced Hall of Famers Peyton Manning, Charles Woodson and Alan Faneca.

We assumed Moss would go in the top 10 and not get past the Dallas Cowboys at No. 8. Moss and his agent figured the same thing, which was part of their thinking in having him skip the combine to have a couple more weeks to train for his pro"

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/523206-how-they-got-here-the-butterfly-effect

"Having known who Randy Moss was for several months, the selection should have been obvious. Moss was easily the best non-quarterback in the draft and possessed a freakish blend of height and speed that nobody had ever seen before.

There was certainly baggage and immaturity that were concerns to most teams that might have a shot at Moss, but nobody could deny his talent, period."

“Plenty”? Like what? 10% of less? lol

10 percent is not insignificant. Draftniks get things wrong all the time. Draft position certainly won't determine which one of these guys is the better receiver right now, much less which one will have the more prolific career.

Fair enough.

My point was though that the term generational talent or prospect gets thrown around way to much and more often than not, turns out to be inaccurate.

    • It was both literally and figuratively a parade of horribles. 1)  Glut of coaching “talent” with designs that didn’t match the personnel and didn’t mesh with each other. 2) An o-line  I’ll-fitted for the scheme on the interior. Injuries compounded this critical weakness. Penetration on runs completely negated whatever zone dominance we tried to establish.  3) Lack of separation by the WR’s. A lack of speed and separation and filling the right roles led to some pretty embarrassing looks. We couldn’t win on multiple levels and it repeatedly trickled down. Also look to (2) because interior pass rush often limited the time for routes to develop. 4) Rookie qb with an average arm but degenerative mechanics. Those railing about arm strength are off. He can sling it with a solid base, and the time of release is plus. 5) as the season wore on, we saw more bailing on the pocket, more dancing, more tip toes . Which isn’t that weird given (1)-(3).    Finally, CJ had one of the best seasons ever for a rookie qb and we missed the pick. It has no bearing whatsoever on whether Bryce Young can be a successful NFL QB. I’ll say this: if the kid does rebound and proves himself, that’s the gamer you want leading your team.
