The Athletic FS - Bryce Conversation

Was basically the same stuff being said last year at this time I don’t remember but the Bryce fawning was insufferable around here a year ago.

It is running around playing flag football right now. I know waiting sucks, believe me, but football hasn’t started yet.

The economist Paul Samuelson famously said, “When facts or events change, I change my mind.  What do you do, sir?”

I think we all want to see a better Bryce this season.  Better play will change many opinions.

Wait, wasn't that John Keynes? My undergrad was Economics.

Definitive statements that won't change shouldn't be made if you want to leave room to change your stance. Bryce won't get taller so saying he's too short to ever be an effective QB is not a statement you'd want to make. Same with arm strength being the worst in the NFL, etc.

we were cautiously optimistic right up until the jets practice/game.  Then from what we saw we knew we had stepped in it.  The kid couldnt play and it was blatantly obvious.

Nope. The Jets practice showed that the oline couldn't block - particularly stunts and delayed blitzes. A rookie QB can't learn to be an NFL QB if he isn't protected. At least a little.

this video is only good for confirming the ideas people that dont like Bryce already have. yall aint tired

Yup, the only reason anyone would have concerns about Bryce the player is because they don't like him. It the only logical conclusion. Surely not objective things like his bad footwork, questionable arm strength, outlier physical stature, etc.

Seems people aren’t looking at the greater picture and getting bogged down that this is some anti-Bryce video.

I highly encourage people to listen to the AFS. Easily the best football related podcast out there.  Mays was one of the best Grantland guys back in the day and The Athletic is easily one the top publications that warrants reading and listening to.

I really don’t see this as “Anti-Bryce.” Sounds like they have a similar conclusion as many of us in that he should have enough to better evaluate and a lot of it will be wait and see. The better than Tua arm strength definitely goes against some of the narratives on here.

But a big problem is you simply saw none of the traits that make a top-10 QB

Compared him to Andy Dalton. Said It would’ve been fine to draft Bryce late 1st/early 2nd and then take advantage of his rookie contract

Like a few of us have mentioned they then go on to say the problem with these types is when it comes time to paying them

Once that Tua cap hit starts coming into play I think Miami will be toast. The problem is you build these super teams around some of these guys and they look good enough that teams are afraid to move on from them. How do you sell a fan base on moving on from a QB while you’re going to the playoffs.

If Bryce’s ceiling is somewhere between Purdy/Tua is it possible to win a SB with him? I personally don’t see it

Your last paragraph sums it up. It can happen, sure, but the odds are very slim and it will require a load of talent and perfect injury conditions to even be above zero chance.

    • lol Honestly, it might sound dumb, but I've had this idea in my head of a specific picture I really want to get with him since draft night. Basically I want it to be of the two of us sitting on the floor next to each other with the picture from behind.  Ideally it would have been with us both wearing T-Mac jerseys (and me wearing an Arizona hat that has block A logo on the back of it too), but since they won't have baby versions of those for a bit and that does seem like a waste of money on something he'll grow out of in a few months, I think I'll go with this that I've found on Amazon for like 12 bucks........ I'll get this made with T-Mac's #4 but then my Nephew's first name (which incidentally starts with a T, so I've already joked to my sister that she needs to change his middle name to something with "Mc" or "Mac" in it so i can call him T-Mac lol) Just think that would make for a really cool picture for me to have of him at this age (just over 13 months now), with the two of us wearing our #4's.  It's the type of thing I can absolutely see myself getting it printed out by Shutterfly on one of those canvas like prints to hang on my wall. And seeing as they live in NYC with me in Michigan, not sure the next time I'll see him again as I can't just drive on down the street for a picture when the jersey arrives, so was hoping I'd be able to take advantage of seeing them at the end of the month to get this picture, but it would all be dependent on the jersey (and this custom onesie) being shipped in time.
    • Just wear another jersey and have AI photoshop it lol
    • His piece of the pie is only going to get smaller unless there are serious injuries.  Unless the actual pie becomes that much larger, ie Bryce being Kurt Warner, I don't think there's room for him to breakout.  Just like there's not room for JT Sanders to break out beyond a couple hundred yards receiving and a few TDs. I don't think a lot of people understand the volume that XL got last year.
