Don’t ever listen to Smitty

That's because for all the respect I had for Smitty being a no punches held guy throughout his playing career, he has done a complete 180 since going into TV.  He has literally been Tepper's mouthpiece since he got the gig with the team.  It's why I don't really listen to poo he says about evaluations anymore bc it's all fluff being pushed from the top down.  I really saw it once Rhule was fired and Smitty finally started all this after-the-fact poo talk about Rhule, but when Rhule was here, Smitty was singing his praises and toeing the company line.

I watched that off-season closely, and I don't ever remember Smitty saying Mingo was his favorite receiver. In fact Mingo was down the list a little bit. David Tepper wanted Bryce, and to say Smitty affected that decision is ludicrous.

Do you remember when Smitty said that Cooper Kupp was the best one in that draft for his money? Funny that Coker has his best day, because Smitty was the first (and only) analyst that I heard praise Coker pre-draft.

Smitty is decidedly non-committal on most of the guys and keeps extreme criticism of them to a minimum during the off-season. He keeps it all in perspective, understands context, and advises people who listen to him to do the same. He knows that there's a lot that can play towards a player's success or failure. He basically tells you if a guy has something to work with.

Coker is our best young receiver.

Being a great player has absolutely zero correlation with being a good talent evaluator.

Mingo is a bust and doesn't need to see the field anymore.   Coker is a better option.

Lol yall can’t have it both ways. Smitty was obsessed with Coker this entire draft process.

Coker was only on my radar because of Smitty. I had literally never heard of the kid and wouldn't have hadn't it been for 89.

    • Not the biggest fan of PFF grades long but they made an interesting point on their commentary this week Bryce Young is presently per them one the worst “deep passers in the NFL” this year.   Which was the comeback narrative of being great at it.  But PFF deep is actually intermediate.  It’s 10 yards.   During his comeback he was able to get off those intermediate passes because of the big shift defenses went running man and blitzing.   where Bryce struggles the most to date is just being asked to stand in the pocket and throw into coverage.   And really struggles on top of that if folks start disguising stuff.  (This part is me….and his small stature and arm struggle facing that)  so I would expect people just don’t give him man.  Dial back the blitzing and just ask him to play into coverage with his arm.
    • While I wanted Stroud I was ok with the Young pick. I didn’t judge. Not even his first year. No knee jerk reactions. Allowed time to watch him learn. It’s into year three and it’s time. He sucks. It’s true this franchise sucks too obviously with other players AND coaches doing much better after leaving.  Unfortunately it’s a severely dysfunctional franchise and the only thing that will save it is a true generational talent at QB that this inept FO actually lucks into picking or high priced elite vet if that is even possible who would come here over other places or Tepper selling or keeling over. Things that are just unlikely to happen.   The Panthers are literally the new age Browns.
    • I knew he wasn't long for the league the first time he went flying through the air like idgaf.
