Early NFL offseason chatter

If he wants to coach both his sons, just stay one more year in college.

Because then Shedeur will suck and get his coach fired, they can hire Deion, and then sign his other son since he’s not getting drafted anyways and is gonna spend the year on a practice squad at best.

Honestly that’s what makes me wonder if Shedeur could even be drafted by someone like the Giants.

If I’m Daboll, no way I’m doing that, it basically just sets yourself up to be fired in a year so they can hire Deion.

So it isn't going to happen with the Sanders 'crew' being Raiders, but all the signs were pointing that way.  It's the Raiders saying no thanks, but the the Sanders family definitely was interested.

If you hire Coach Prime, you are handing him the keys to everything. And I mean everything.

I loved the guy as a player. Loved him as a commentator. But if you thought his self-promotion made it hard to deal with him solo, then him plus his sons on the biggest national stage ever... you will lose everything you had for a middling to best coach and some totally over-hyped lesser versions of him.

And you'll come out looking like the bad guy when you eventually have to cut him and them loose.

If Johnson is that much in demand, can't see why he would want the Raiders job.

Two simple reasons, one I get, one makes no sense to me

The easy one is Tom Brady.  It's hard to say everything he touches doesn't find a way to work out, so getting to work on building out an NFL team with him, I can see the appeal to that.

The other is job security, which in a vacuum, I do get, but not in this particular instance.  They're selling him on "we know this roster is a mess, we want YOU to come here and build this team out as you see fit and we're going to give you more than enough time to see it through since we know it's not a 1 year fix.

Which sure, it makes sense given how quickly so many teams move on from HC's if they don't have immediate success, particularly with the types of jobs people expected Johnson to be looking at.  As everyone expected him to take over a team with an established QB and more ready to compete right away, the ones who aren't going to give you forever to become a winning team.

However, I still think the Raiders are the absolute wrong team to take that approach with if you're a HC candidate, because of the division.  You have maybe the next GOAT, another Top 10 QB, and a very promising looking rookie to make the best QB division in the league.  Then you have one of the best HC's of all time (who even if he doesn't have too many years left, they'll still have Mahomes there), as well as a former SB winner and offensive "genius" and a NCAA NC who has taken an NFL team to a SB as well, to make the best HC division in the league.

Even if they give you time to build out the franchise, good luck putting a consistent contender together in a division that has 3 teams looking like they are all set up for long term sustained success.

Arguments I've heard, validity unknown...

It's been said he doesn't like the idea of being in direct competition with his old team. How much of a factor that is? Don't know, but it would favor the Raiders and the Jags if true.

Have also seen it suggested that he wants to be able to pick his own quarterback rather than having to work with someone picked prior to his arrival. That doesn't seem farfetched.

Word also that the Raiders are prepared to pay him a contract that'll piss off other owners. Definitely something I could picture Davis doing but can the Raiders actually do it? We'll see.

And yeah, there's the Brady factor (for whatever that's really worth). Brady has reportedly been going "full court press" on Johnson. Doubt Johnson is starstruck or anything like that but Brady might have a convincing argument.

Bottom Line: There's certainly loads of chatter, but there usually is 😕

The pick your qb thing is baffling.  Who is he going to pick?  Won't be able to draft anyone this year.  Next year will be a crap shoot as well.  IMO, Jacksonville is the only real choice.  While I have always thought that Lawrence was overrated, he is probably nearly as good as Goff, and could win with the right team around him.

Depends on your mindset.

Most guys taking head coaching jobs look at sh-t situations but say to themselves "I can fix it".

Is that Johnson? No idea 😕

    • I am no football savant as has been demonstrated here over and over, but I saw it.  I went for years doing the mock draft thing and researching the players that we might get around our pick, time consuming stuff. And we would get to the draft and trade the pick. All that time, wasted.  So I quit doing that. Also realized I was not a scout and would never be a scout and went to looking the videos and reports After  we picked a guy.  Maybe I would look at the 1st round, but quit that too and just looked after we picked.    When they did that trade I saw Bryce and his size and just ruled him out. Then it got to yeah they are probably going to take him, I relented and looked at some video and got to his pro day. It took me all of a few minutes to see the issues. The footwork. The arm. And the tape of games? The backyard style. I knew, what can I say?  (Also, went down the physical checklist, not a single plus attribute on the NFL level. Arm, speed, size, etc, nothing to offset the negatives. nothing)  I think it was easy for me because I had not watched a single game he played in college, and wasn’t drawn in by the hype. Had no preconceived notions and just looked at it pretty clinically.  I got in here and everyone was going “but look at what he did in college! It is the SEC, if he can do it in the SEC he can do it in the NFL!” Couldn’t reason with hardly anyone.  I don’t think I could tell you which guy would succeed between two prototypical guys with great arms and athleticism, and have no special insight into any of that. My one calling in football scouting was to see the real about what we were about to do. And you still don’t know for sure until they get in a real game in the NFL.
    • Miss Bryce sorely is possibly the most hilarious statement I have read on the Huddle in quite some time.
    • He did only throw 1 pass 20+ in that game. I think he is still struggling to adjust to the NFL. At Alabama he was able to extend plays and play backyard football. That's not only not the style of offense we have been running but his physical skills don't lend themselves to that style of play at this level.  So, the amount of issues he actually has to clean up are WAAAAAY more than I anticipated as a guy that had Bryce #1 on my board in that draft class.  I am just not seeing a reasonable path for him to clean it all up and develop in a reasonable timeframe
