McClain saw his stock in the draft rise dramatically during Connecticut's pro day. Thanks to an intensive training regimen at Parisi Speed School in New Jersey, the 5-foot-9, 195-pound McClain wowed scouts in attendance with his 4.42 in the 40-yard dash, 23 225-pound reps and a 38 1/2-inch vertical leap.

BTW, am I the only one who's impressed by how much speed the Panthers just drafted with their last few picks? I don't know how it will translate on the field yet, but a couple of these guys have some very impressive 40 times for 6th and 7th round picks.

Speed is only one component. Who was the guy we signed as a UDFA that was a high pick in the CFL. He was incredibly quick but didn't even make the team. Anyone can improve a guy's 40 time with intensive training at one of these training facilites. That doesn't make them a football player. If it did then all the rosters in the NFL would be filled with track stars.

You must have missed the part where I said that I don't know how that speed will translate to the field. Believe me, I know that 40 times aren't everything, because speed is useless if it's going the wrong way. Even if none of these guys make the team though, it is still pretty rare to find that kind of speed that late in the draft.

      He does have speed. 21+ top end speed is very fast for a linebacker and his 3 cone drill time is considered excellent, close to elite.

      This is awesome because you get to see the perspectives of the scouts--get a glimpse behind the curtain. I wonder whose doing this was; I am curious as to why David Tepper allowed it. Maybe it was his wife. Maybe Dan.  At least from my perspective--and probably one shared by other fans--when David Tepper bought the team, he closed everything off too much to the fans, and really didn't give an explanation. Things were obviously done because he (and/or some others wanted to do it). Remember when they used the guise of construction and all that to keep fans from seeing the team during practice? I know there are laws and safety and all that, but Tepper could've made it happen. And, of course, we all know that they essentially fired Jeremy from his independent contractor gig as a photojournalist. I never understood why they'd do that (and the negative reverberations obviously affected Jeremy and ultimately this place--i.e, us fans). The pie was (and is) certainly big enough to throw some scraps to the independents. I realize that you can't necessarily open the floodgates, but a few different perspectives from indy journalists whether in word or photos is a good thing in my mind.  So, it's great to see different perspectives. I will say this however: it is not without risk, as you know there will be some buster who will be calling the scouts out if the players flop. I think we should all keep in mind that the buck stops with the GM. It's nice to have one, however, that is so convicted in his people and process--and ultimately success, that he's willing to give fans access to this type of information. Pass this on to Tepper.

      I hope he ends up being our best ever at the position. Ryan Kalil left big shoes behind that we haven't quite been able to fill since.
