Richard Marshall back on the field

The thing with Marshall is that if he doesn't want to play and give it his all, he will be replaced with Munnerlyn or someone else. Honestly, he isn't so great that he can't be replaced. In fact I expect that he will not be here next year. With everyone we have to sign and keep, I doubt he is high priority. He is going to have to play better IMO in order to justify a longterm contract. In Meeks system, corners don't have to be shurdown guys. In fact by drafting so many secondary guys we might be preparing to replace him next year.

he'll be playing for a big contract from someone. i'm not worried about his production.

I'm hoping he will play lights out because he is in a contract year. If we lose him after that...eh. At least we will have gotten some top notch play out of him.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -Carolina Panthers starting cornerback Richard Marshall is back on the field after missing minicamp while upset about his contract situation.

Marshall is participating in voluntary workouts this week at Bank of America Stadium. He said Tuesday he hasn't signed his one-year tender worth $1.759 million, but will before the start of training camp.

Marshall is one of many NFL players with four years of service who would've been unrestricted free agents if the owners hadn't decide to end the collective bargaining agreement after this season. The move put different rules in place that left Marshall a restricted free agent with few options.

Coach John Fox says Marshall is in great shape despite also skipping the team's offseason conditioning program.

Looks like he confirmed that he will sign it

I agree that Marshall sounds like he doesn't have an attitude and if he plays hard his big payday will come either by the Panthers or some other team, but to replace him with Munnerlyn would hurt the Panther's secondary quite a bit, there's no doubt about this.

Compare Marshall and Munnerlyn's production:

Marshall's rookie season when he played the same role as Munnerlyn did last season, 3rd CB (nickel etc..).

2006 season: 16 games played, he made 83 tackles, 1 sack, 3 interceptions with 1 going for a TD, 2 forced fumbles, and 15 passes defensed.

Captain Munnerlyn's rookie production last season while playing as the 3rd CB.

2009 season: 15 games played, he made 44 tackles, 1 forced fumble, and 1 pass defensed.

Marshall's production last season while starting at CB for his first season doing so.

2009 season: 16 games played, he made 88 tackles, 4 interceptions, and 9 passes defensed. He was also in the top ten for starting CBs in the NFL for least amount of missed tackles.

I think Marshall will have a strong season this year with this upcoming season being his second season at starting. I'm glad he's going to be playing.

Marshall is one of the better #2 corners in the league. You guys need to understand how important depth is at these positions.

Won't surprise me if he wasn't playing here next season though. He'll probably get traded for a 3rd round pick just so we don't have to pay him. JR needs to stop trying to set an example for other owners and worry about his fans that buy tickets to the games :\

It would be nice to re-sign Marshall , but it may not happen because Marshall may not be reasonable about what he's worth and will go to which ever team is willing to pay him the most. The players listed below are the priorities in my opinion of who to resign.

1)Jon Beason *Great leader and heart of the D, Panther, hopefully for life.

2)D Lo *even if we didnt have Stewart, id put him 2nd to Beason, hopefully balancing the carries will lead to longer careers for double trouble.

3)Ryan khalil (A quality young center, O line is very important)

4) Thomas Davis( we have alot of depth, Davis honestly is just now being as advertised, Hope to see him have a healty and pro bowl y.r

5)and it would be nice to resign Marshall if he has a solid yr, but I dont see it honestly possible, his market value will be too high,in my opinion.

    • I love this draft because they picked the right OL.  It is possible that we have 2 rookies starting on the OL.  I would take Utah's Lomu as well, but for those who think you find the OL in free agency and not the draft, here is all I have to say:  We cannot give $110m to the 5 starting OL.  We need an infusion of youth on the OL as well.  If Ickey returns and can play, I imagine that he takes over for Hunt at RG--in 2027 or so.  Currently, our 2 guards and right tackle make up over 20% of the total cap.  We have to add 2 starters, but if Cade Mays was too pricey at around (anticipated) $8m, then we plan to draft a C, it seems. I think we draft an OT and C now because we will need a G or 2 and a RT soon.  While they were good in 2026, they were not elite.  For that kind of $$, we need elite.  Is starting a rookie LT and C ideal?  Nope.  But if we can get better than Nijman and Mays, we should be OK. I think we will pick up an ILB in free agency and add an ILB.  Who we draft (Mike or Will) will depend on who we sign.  Rodriguez is a favorite of mine, but if Golday is there, Morgan is going to take him.  Morgan will love him. I do not think we need to overpopulate the edge position right now because we have 1 edge returning from injury (Jones II), one rookie from last year ready to step up and could be really good (Scourton), and another who could be ready to step into the situational pass rusher role (Princely).  2 hold the edge very well and if we had a situational pass rusher to join Princely, we could be much better. I think rookies at Edge tend to jump considerably from their rookie seasons to years 2 and 3.  (Charles Johnson, Mike Rucker, and Greg Hardy were that way-and all became very good in time. Safety seems omitted, but we shall see.  That could be another free agent acquisition.
    • Id like Evans from Duke in the draft as a shooter for the second unit. And probably a more athletic big to replace all, he's good but doesn't really fit the style. White, Evans, green, Williams and center tbd is a pretty good second unit
