Gassing up at BP

Gas stations sell all brands of gas as mentioned before. Regardless of where you go, you could be buying BP gasoline. Many of the stations are also just franchises that are locally owned. They did not cause the spill and it's not right to hold BP's screwup against them.

I have to buy from BP for 2 reasons.

1 - Gas station is near my house.

2 - I got a credit card from Chase/BP. I get money back from BP. Every 8 fills I get a free tank of gas and a car wash. Btw, BP gas station was full of cars today.

if they also opted out of the safety measure that would've prevented it, right? i don't know if other companies have or not.

I was listening to testimony of one of the engineers from the company that owns the rig that BP was leasing on NPR this morning. They didn't necessarily opt out of safety measures (it appears that the safety measures didn't work as they should). According to this one fellow, a BP official did rush them more than they were comfortable with and there were several heated discussions between the engineers and the BP official but in the end, the engineers agreed reluctantly.

If what he said was accurate, then BP is certainly guilty of a stupid mistake, but still just a mistake. They should pay for it, and they will. And I imagine the BP official who rushed them is or soon will be looking for another job as well as a Lawyer. But we are dealing with human's and humans make mistakes. As long as we continue to drive cars, and use oil, this kind of thing is going to be a risk, and there is nothing we can do to completely eliminate the risk.

If you want to know who I believe is really at fault, its we the people and our lifestyle today.

If BP is guilty of anything more than the original mistake it's not getting this thing under control as quickly as they could have/should have. They are guilty of blame shifting and spin control while the oil was leaking instead of acting quickly. The government should take some blame on this too for not jumping on top of them and making them move faster.

I don't buy from BP anyway either because they are more expensive in general. There's a GoGas right down from my office and that's where I usually get gas.

Dont Buy gas from BP but did some research and this isnt there first disaster. They had a major leak up in Alaska that took them a long time to fix. They also had a explosion in Texas. To many accidents for one company if you ask me.

Don't buy gas there but I am guilty of stopping in to buy a couple of Lo cal Rockstar Recovery lemonade drinks....they are delicious and help me hydrate plus they are excellent when mixed with vodka and prevent hangovers.

Edit *Forgot to state my main point for posting in this thread* When I stopped in, I was surprised at the amount of people getting gas there. All pumps were 2 deep some were 3 deep waiting for gas. I figured there would have been more of a backlash.

I think it's funny seeing people say "BP is good gas." Have you ever watched the trucks that come in to fill up the tanks? They don't say any brand of gas on the side because they take that gas to multiple gas stations. The gasoline is pumped from the gulf along the east coast and one of their major hubs is Greensboro. Each company does not have their own gas line running from the Gulf across the south east. It's all the same damn gas.

True, additives help to clean your engine, but what the companies don’t tell you is that all gas has them. Since 1994 the government has required that detergents be added to all gasoline to help prevent fuel injectors from clogging. State and local regulators keep a close watch to make sure those standards are met; a 2005 study indicated that Florida inspectors checked 45,000 samples to ensure the state’s gas supply was up to snuff, and 99 percent of the time it was. “There’s little difference between brand-name gas and any other,” says AAA spokesperson Geoff Sundstrom.

What’s more, your local Chevron station may sell gas refined by Shell or Exxon Mobil. Suppliers share pipelines, so they all use the same fuel. And the difference between the most expensive brand-name gas and the lowliest gallon of no-brand fuel? Often just a quart of detergent added to an 8,000-gallon tanker truck.

this is only partially true. Regular unleaded gas, yes, you will find that some of the brands do get mixed based on pipeline availability etc. Specialty gases though, especially premium gas, typically are much closer to 100% of the brand you are shopping at. For my car and my bikes, I have always found that Shell premium gas always gives me extra power...not sure 100% why.

they have had a terrible safety record lately for sure. The BP Texas City incident killed 15 people and that very location was cited for many many safety deficiencies over a long period of time. Before the big incident, they had several other fatal incidents as well. I truly believe that their cost cutting measures have overlooked some major safety issues.

    • The Seahawks won an emotional, divisional, overtime rivalry game vs the Rams on a Thursday night (Dec 18).  That gives them 10 days to prepare for the Panthers, but the Christmas holiday fell a week later--I bet they were afforded an extra day for travel-many coming back east.  Following the Panthers, Seattle plays at San Francisco for the division title (in all probability).   The Rams finish the season with games against the Falcons and Cardinals, two likely wins, pushing them to 13-4.  The Niners finish the season with home games against the Bears and Seahawks. Seattle finishes the season with the Panthers on the road and SF in California.   It is easy to see how preparing for the Panthers, during the holiday break and with the Niners waiting for them in SF a week later for (what could be) the NFC West title and #1 Seed in the NFC, could create the perfect trap game scenario.  The Panthers at home are 5-2.   In the past 2 weeks, the Seahawks struggled to beat the Phillip Rivers Colts in Seattle and then pulled off a miraculous, emotional victory at home vs. the Rams.  I am not convinced that they are as good as advertised. Seattle is a TD favorite in Charlotte.  I feel that Carolina by 3 may be more accurate.  While I am still not confident in this team's consistency and it never seems to dominate, it sure feels like a trap game for Seattle to me.  How could they NOT be thinking of San Francisco right now?  They are not used to being in this position (current players) and it is human nature.  Carolina 27, Seattle 24.
    • It is a tough decision.  There is another factor.  Is he in game shape?  A tired Hunt is not better than an "in-shape" Corbett.  When coming off an injury, it is natural to want to protect the injured area, even if it is completely healed.  This can cause you to contort your body for no reason, lose fundamentals, and it could lead to other injuries.  For example, I had a knee in high school that required getting taped.  That made me aware of the knee (not used to tape on my knee) and I pulled my groin (favoring or dragging the leg with the tape).  The trainer explained the groin injury the way I do here--but scared money makes no money.  If he is cleared to play, he is cleared to play.  Watch him, rotate him in for a series, etc.  Specifically, I would want to watch the matchup--who is winning more--Corbett or Hunt?  How is the defense reacting (if at all) to Hunt being in?  Etc.
    • Shannon was sued for $50 million (settled out of court, I believe) for forcing sex on his girlfriend during a two-year relationship.  He denies it, but ESPN let him go last April.  Chad Johnson's wife filed a police report because he head-butted her in a car and was put on probation. I had to google it.  I watched the Ray Rice video and when you see it, you realize just how vile and cowardly abusing a woman really is.  But for the same point Aussie tried to make, these women are defenseless, and being phyiscally bigger and stronger does not validate your actions.   I can't even stand to watch Steve Smith.  I can't normalize this kind of behavior--again, I do not think R-P had that in mind when he posted this.  When the reason was exposed, we should realize that we are talking life (quality of) and death (in some cases) here.
