Armanti Edwards Signs (4yr, 2.5 mil)

Recommended Posts

Most of the time signings occur from the bottom up. If you look at it we have signed everyone but the top 2 picks. If we had a first rounder it would take longer. It is pretty easily to sign higher round picks as the guys around them fall into place. The hard ones are the first rounders most of the time.
Granted. It's just that we have our third rounder already signed in early July whereas we signed other third rounders like Connor, Irvin and Godfrey after the 20th. Not that I'm complaining at all, it's just the pace of these signings are bit faster than what I'm used to.

I suspect that with so many jobs open and competiton so likely, everyone wants to get signed so they can get in and give it their all. I expect that the front office is anxious to get everyone in as well given that lots of these rookies will see playing time this year.

I don't think the Panther's overpaid to get him and I'm glad he's been signed.

He'll prove the naysayers wrong.

And if he shows the kind of athletic ability at the pro level he did in college, his next contract will be, shall we say, a tad larger.

And it's not like this is his first time playing receiver. That was his position up till his senior year of high school.

Pat White was like Edwards, a quarterback in college who has little to no liklihood of being the franchise quarterback.

We tried to move up to get him at 33 but the Rams wouldn't trade so obviously we thought he was worth money in that range. You don't think that will come up in the negotiations?? If he gets less money than 2 million, there will be incentives in his contract for playing time, etc. Lets say we do trade Moore at the end of this season. Do you honestly believe that Clausen will be content being the starter and making 1 million a year. We can either give him what he deserves right away or he will have outplayed his contract by year 3 and we paying a ton more then. If we have any fantasy that he is the future we will pay him well now and keep him happy.

Look at it this way if you pay him 2 million a year for 5 years or 10 million you are way ahead versus paying him 4 years and 5 million and then extending him year 3 with a 30 million signing bonus when he outplays his contract.

I am not denying it's impossible to predict contracts with what players will demand, but you are completely over looking how contracts beyond the 1st round work.

In 2008 Chad Henne, picked in slot 57 signed a 4 year $3.5 million deal.

*Pick #33 Donnie Avery signed a 4 year $5 million deal

*Pick #34 Devin Thomas signed a 4 year $4.8million deal

*Pick #36 Jordy Nelson signed a 4 year $4.7 million deal

*Pick #42 Eddie Royal signed a 4 year $3.2 million deal

*Pick #44 Matt Forte signed a 4 year $3.7 million deal

*Pick #48 Fred Davis signed a 4 year $3.5 million deal

*Pick #51 Malcom Kelly signed a 4 year $3.36 million deal

*Pick #57 Chad Henne signed a 4 year $3.5 million deal

*Pick #59 Mike Pollack signed a 4 year $3 million deal

These are the % movements between the picks

*Pick #33 = $5million

*Pick #34 = 4% drop

*Pick #36 = 2% drop - average of 1% per draft pick

*Pick #42 = 32% drop - average of 5% per draft pick

*Pick #44 = 13% increase - average of 7% per draft pick

*Pick #48 = 5% drop - average of 1% per draft pick

*Pick #51 = 4% drop - average of 1% per draft pick

*Pick #57 = 4% increase - average of 0.5% per draft pick

*Pick #59 = 14% drop - average of 7% per draft pick

Two things to consider, if Eddie Royal signs a contract that drops by 2% per draft pick, he would have signed a $4.16million deal, which then fits in almost exactly with the rest of the contracts throughout the round other than Chad.

So considering that, Chad Henne 'should' have been expecting a $3.1million contract, but saw an 19% increase. What you are suggesting is 192% increase over the previous years #48 pick. Even taking into considering the inflation of $3.5 to $3.76, an increase of 7%, a normal #48 pick could expect around $4million (Vladimir Ducasse only received 3-4% increase), you are still suggesting a 175% increase.

The argument that Clausen will claim we wanted to pick him higher and that he was a projected 1st round QB will get him no where, Michael Crabtree is an example of that. He 'may' get more money int he later years of his contract than the 3 picks ahead of him, but that is hardly the astronomical increase you are describing.

You additional argument that we should give him a contract he is happy with for his entire tenure here is ridiculous. What if Moore plays lights out and becomes our franchise QB. What if Clausen is forced to wait like Aaron Rodgers was, finally being starter with one or two years left on his deal? It makes no sense to pay him more NOW, in the event of 'what ifs' and 'pay his potential'. Until he steps on that field and proves he can play, you pay him the draft pick he was chosen in. There are tons of QBs who became starters in their rookie, 1st or 2nd years and did not demand top dollar before actually starting their first game. The only occasion this has happened, is for Kevin Kolb, which I feel Phili must have built protection into the contract, otherwise it's crazy.

I am a little blown away by your reasoning. I will stop short of saying it will never happen, but if you sign him to that kind of contract, you might as well start him from day one. Moore does not have the experience to prevent that amount of investment from sitting on the bench.

So if we pay 4 years 2.5 million for a late third round receiver, anyone still think we can get Clausen who is a mid second rounder for close to that?? I predicted closer to 5 years 10 to 12 million. or 2 to 2 1/2 million a year. That will still be a bargain if Moore wants 7 or 8.

Yeah I know I derailed the thread. LOL

Last years number 89 pick...

TE, Jared Cook, South Carolina - Signed (4-years, $2.45M; $700,000 signing bonus)

Seems to me that the draft is falling pretty much as expected in terms of who is paid what...

Lots of good work there. You went a long way after admitting you or I don't know how this will shake out. And given the austerity budget Richardson is on these days, you are probably totally right. We may not give him one penny more than we have to based on his draft position. I do think his position is unique in that I can't remember a guy who was ranked top 10 on many boards falling so far on draft day.

Perhaps I am looking down the road and speculating about the future and putting too much of that into the discussion. It seems with all the uncertainty down the road the easiest thing to do would concentrate on the now and not plan for the long term.

I really do believe that good or bad. Moore won't be here after this year and your analysis just reinforces it. If Clausen signs for a little over a million dollars a season, do you think that Richardson will keep Moore if it will cost us 7-10 million a season. Or will he go with the cheap guy and use Cantwell or Pike as the backup. With so many of our guys entering free agency next year I find it hard to believe that we will keep everyone and Moore seems primed to go.

At the least I would put in escalators for performance in the event he did become the starter. That way he is motivated and compensated and I am not worried about him pulling a Chris Johnson.

I suspect we will have our answer in a week or two. And honestly upon further consideration you are probably right. Our front office is not thinking down the road at all. We are so focused on pinching pennies and the CBA agreement, that we will do what we have to without thinking about how to make this work in the long term.

Oh and your logic that paying him 2 million a year instead of 1 million a year is ridiculous and mind blowing is hardly the case. Moore will make over 3 million this season so if we start the guy who makes more money that will still be Moore. Your logic may apply is we are talking Michael Crabtree money or Sam Bradford money but we aren't. We could take care of all the issues by paying a modest signing bonus of $800,000, paying him $500,000 a season for the first 2 years and then increasing it to 2 million year 3, 3 million year 4 and 4 million year 5.

We are guaranteeing 800,000 ( a small sum), we have addressed the issue of him not starting until at least year 3 because he is getting only a little over the rookie minimum and even in year 4 he would make no more than Moore is making this year. Even in year five he is getting less than half of what a starter is making. And what have we guaranteed?? Less than a million.
