Panthers working to repair pass game

Smith returning to the field will make things looks better. His pass catching ability and determination to come down with the ball every single time will instantly improve Moore's rating. And the coverage that is dictated by Smith will create opportunities for the other receivers that they are not enjoying right now.

Smith will also bring some of the pressure off of the offensive line. Him being on the field dictates that you cannot and will not bring a safety forward into the box. It also means that a weak side linebacker will often have to help with coverage schemes for tight ends.

So, there is hope. But fellas, they all need to improve before Smitty takes the field, or it will all be for naught if the original mighty mite suffers an injury.

While I agree none of the receivers have stepped up and taken the outright #2 spot...I really don't put any blame on them or the QB's.

Sure there are/were some passes that should have been made but we will have those from any receiver, even Smitty on rare occations.

Our problem, right now, lies in the O-line...as fans we should expect anyone; QB or WR, to look good when they are rushed like they have been! Even if Smith were on the field the last two games I don't think it would have made that much of a difference. It all starts with pass protections and right now, thats where it end too!

Once again, Smith on the field, believe it or not, actually helps pass protection. Opposing teams have to shy a linebacker over a bit to cut off crossing patterns for him, at least one safety has to shift to lend aid to the corner and there is no chance in hell that the corner from his side will pull a surprise blitz.

Each of those things pulls away some of the potential rush that a defense normally musters. In addition getting Otah back on the line will help immensely as will not rotating in the backup center.

Lastly, and this can't be overlooked, is that in the preseason, the defensive side of the ball sees a lot more substitution than on the offensive side. DEs and DTs are generally fresher throughout the game than their counterparts on the offensive side of the ball. Part of the wearing down of a defensive line that an OL like ours does is the same effect a smart boxer has when he clenches with an opponent. The boxer will hang his weight on the opponent, causing them to have to partly carry him, wearing out the opponent. Offensive linemen do this whenever they can get away with it (holding penalty bait).

I wouldn't count on Smith for the whole season right now. Smith has broken the same arm twice in about 8 months. He broke it the second time just playing tag football. I just have doubts is to wheather smith arm can hold up the whole season. If it didn't take much for him to break it a second time. You just wonder how much hitting and beating it can take before it might break once again. I will question smith health for the whole season pretty much. That arm worries me the most is to wheather it will last throught this season or not. That's why the other WRs need to really step it and give it their all this season.

    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
    • I think people aren’t patient enough with Young. It can take a few years for a QB to develop. Look at Darnold, Baker and most recently Daniel Jones.   he hasn’t been able to put up big passing numbers either cause of how much we run the ball. You can tell our coaching staff still hasn’t took the training wheels off Bryce and let him go all out. We’ve had some pretty bad receivers as well. We finally got a true number one last year and look how much Bryce improved. Still we didn’t really have any depth behind TMac. Coker was hurt for a lot of the year and XL was our #2. How many big plays or TDs has XL dropped? I think this year can be the year we see Bryce able to hit his stride. If not then we can start looking for another qb but I just ask people to be patient.
