I am sure we will have a new thread every time a receiver is released in the preseason by some other team. Still it seems that we will continue to do what we have done all year. We won't be bringing in any notable receiver through free agency especially to compete for the number 2 slot. Instead we will work with who we have already and expect someone to rise up and distinguish themselves or at least contribute to the group effort. Much like they expect at DE, it won't be one player but several who may have to step up and contribute to the combined effort.

Asked if he was confident that his second receiver was here, and not requiring a late-preseason addition, Tolbert nodded.

“Very confident. Very confident,” Tolbert said. “And whether it’s one guy or three guys, I have confidence in all of those guys to be able to take coaching and when their time is called go in there and produce

LaFell’s impressed with his downfield speed and his ability to create yards after the catch (he averaged 14.4 yards per reception at LSU)..... Of course, Jarrett has fly-paper hands, and the team’s not counting out Kenny Moore and Wallace Wright.

“They have all done a really good job,” receivers coach Tyke Tolbert said. “It’s up to us as time goes to figure out who is going to be that next guy to step up and fit that role. And it may be by committee. You never know. But I’m pleased with those four guys competing for that spot, and they’re all doing a good job. The thing about it is they’re all smart guys and versatile.”

Lafelle will make a good #2 if he doesn't drop the ball so much. Dwayne Jarret can be a good possession reciever if he wants to be and I like Kenny Moore or Armanti in the slot beleive it or not. Wallace Wright shuld have a decent season too.

I'm still pulling hard for Gettis to make the team.

Lafelle will make a good #2 if he doesn't drop the ball so much. Dwayne Jarret can be a good possession reciever if he wants to be and I like Kenny Moore or Armanti in the slot beleive it or not. Wallace Wright shuld have a decent season too.

I'm still pulling hard for Gettis to make the team.

This would be of the utmost importance.

We have played all of two preseason games, and some are already saying Lafell is a bust? They should be working on Wall Street if they have that kind of prophetic ability. Of all the receivers we have, he probably has the best shot to develope into a solid number 2. Not saying he will, just that he has the best shot.

Spoken like a true disciple of John Fox. What should he say? I suck as a coach as I have not developed any talent with our group of young wide receivers.

The Panthers will dance with the ugly girl they took to the prom.

He developed Lee Evans, Josh Reed with Buffalo and Boldin with Arizona. I'd say at this point Tolbert knows what he's doing and gets the benefit of the doubt. Plus he's never been associated with Fox before coming to Carolina this season......

I haven't heard anyone proclaim lafell as a bust...not once. Your confusing him with the other "WR" we took in the third round. His hands have been a problem since college and most of us already knew about it. I think we all just hoped it wouldn't follow him to the NFL...other than his hands (which is a big deal) he has shown he is very capable.

If this becomes #2 by committee, I don't have confidence that our passing game will be successful. Maybe #3 by committee would work. But somebody needs to step up and be that second threat. To me, LaFell isn't quite there. It has to be Jarrett, but there are so many question marks. He can't get separation. Moore hasn't looked good. Armanti is out of the picture at WR.

Tolbert is going to say he believes in his receivers regardless of how he really feels.

I would love to see Barnidge become the go to #2 guy. The kid gets open!

So how many other teams have a rookie at #2? I just think they should let them develop a little more than throwing them out there like that (Jarrett). Sigh, man I really hate not bringing in a WR. I hope Tolbert can find enough guys to replace smitty in case he gets injured, might want to up the # of WRs to 10.

I get what he is trying to do, saying you have a lot of guys that can replace one guy makes a lot of sense on defense like Pepper's leaving but on offense we don't have a Manning or Brees so it's going to be hard in many ways to replace a WR with a 'bunch of guys'.

Then you didn't read the comments under the article.

Let's just face it, Lafell is a bust. Another sorry wide receiver pick. All he does is drop balls. He has speed, but no hands. He must not have been a receiver in college. He may get open down field, but it's after the QB has already unloaded the ball. Let's just go ahead and cut him and eliminate the salary and wasted time.

Actually loads of people on Wall Street spew out crap on a daily bases. So thats no so far fetched. I just hope Tolbert can fix bad hands like our last WR coach. When Moose came into the league he had the same rock hard hands.

      Well he had essentially a 70% completion rate for almost three thousand yards.  Biggest issues were awkward and inconsistent release.  I wouldn't call arm strength bad, but not great.

      I see him being better and most of that is a few downfield passes that were seemingly non existent.    But it is what is around him that has dictated the trajectory more than the quarterbacking. He is game manager level and unable to dictate to defenses.  And even if I am wrong and he is the reason we ‘upwarded’, we are bumping our heads on the ceiling and only making meager gains. If it is an incline it is awfully shallow degree wise. Like a finance graph that tracks your progress and hovers around the rate of inflation. Barely breaking even.  Is that where you want your money?  We make up these deadlines expectations and generally he does the minimum of what he needs to do to hang around.    It does not encourage me to believe that when we get into a game against a good run d that we cannot break down with our run game, to believe that we can pivot to the air and successfully counter their strategy.  But they run it back again. Of course I am gunshy of a repeat of the same thing we have watched for three years.    oh, and yes his durability is his most impressive positive for my money. I fear the other shoe dropping on that and the contractual consequences that will follow.   Last  of all, too late to edit my mistake here but would like to acknowledge it: the last three years has done very little to convince me that I was not wrong in not wanting him. One too many “not”s.
