Tuesday Roster Moves: Davis to PUP, Wright and Taylor to IR

Jarrett's future is probably in his own hands right now, but he's still a long shot to make the team. If he can score a touchdown for us Thursday, he probably saves his starting spot and the WR2 position. If not, there are guys behind him that either have potential or are willing to play special teams as well.

Cutting the team down to 53 players makes the guy who has rode the pine for three years look like a cut that has to be made. Let's face it, up to now, Jarrett hasn't done anything to even outperform such former standouts as Keary Colbert and Drew Carter. And he doesn't even have Colbert's injuries to make an excuse with.

The receivers will be:

1. Smith

2. LaFell

3. Moore

4. Gettis

5. Edwards

Each one has more upside than Jarrett and offers more versatility. I'd say that he'll have about eight snaps within which to change someone's mind on Thursday night. If not, someone might snag him off of waivers as a project.

Projects, we've got enough of 'em.

Let's put it this way: who showed more potential their first preseason, Jarrett or Gettis? And who has more potential to develop into a threat later? I think with Jarrett, what you see is what you get. He's been in the league three years and it's highly doubtful he'll turn into anything more than what he is.

Sure, he's got great hands. But is he worth keeping around for the last year of his contract if it means one of the young, promising players has to be cut. I would submit to you that it is not.

Before the Wright injury I thought Jarrett would be cut. Now I don't think so. But you never know. If LaFell looks to be a better option as a No. 2 than Jarrett, then it would make sense to cut Jarrett and let some of the younger guys fight for that barely-used No. 3 spot.

LaFell has the #2 spot earmarked for him, Edwards the #3. Depends on if they want to be patient and let Jarrett play out his contract before letting him walk, or if they say fug it and throw LaFell in the fire. Same situation with Moore/Edwards.

Gettis is kind of a wildcard and is probably low risk insurance against LaFell busting/not performing. He's also a good PS candidate, but he's shown enough that someone MIGHT try to grab him off waivers. He would probably make it though, every team has 1 or 2 promising project / "almost good enough" WRs.

I think Jarrett stays, but who knows. T. Guy is PS bound, almost guaranteed and will easily clear waivers.

Smith

Jarrett

Moore

LaFell

Edwards

Gettis

Is what I think now. Jarrett to ease the transition for LaFell, with LaFell taking the #2 spot about halfway through the season. Moore sticks at slot and fights for his life next off-season.

I thought DJ would have been cut a month ago, now I am not so sure. I think he makes the team. Its more a testament of how piss poor we are at the position than his deserving a spot on a NFL team.

Same. I think if LaFell flashed like they hoped he would, Jarrett would be gone right now. He's the beneficiary of being part of a terrible WR group.

No doubt.

I just feel like if we're going to suck at that position, we might as well let the young guys suck. I mean, that's sort of been the philosophy all offseason, and it would probably serve us better for the future if we were to cut Jarrett and give some of these young guys a shot in preparation for the year (or lack of year) to come.

6 WRS:

Smith

Jarrett

Lafell

Moore

Gettis

Edwards

I am ok going into the season with that. I would rather not see anybody on that list cut. Smith - cause he is Smitty, Jarret because I can still see him being productive and he is a veteran, Lafell and Gettis because they were draft picks and have been somewhat ok plus have upside. Edwards is staying and that is a given because what they gave up for him and potential. Then Moore is ok. I do not know who I would do instead. The only other options is to bring in a vet (which I do not see happening and I am fine with that) and cut one of the guys. I do not like the options of keeping 5 WR's. I think the Panthers need the depth of carrying 6.

I've started to rethink my expectations of Jarrett. For many of us, we thought he would be the next Moose type of receiver. I don't think he'll ever fit that mold, nor do I think he can be a solid No. 2 receiver period.

Instead, maybe we need to think of Jarrett more as the Proehl type of receiver who catches nearly everything thrown his way. Make him our fourth option and design some third down and redzone plays just for him, since he can't seem to handle the full playbook anyway.

I don't think Jarrett can ever contribute as a fulltime starter on this team, but I wouldn't be averse to seeing him worked in as a niche player.

I think the Panthers need to carry 6 Wr's this year. I think they are going to need the depth and would rather not depend on picking or bringing somebody in later, etc. I also think Jarret can produce and will not be cut. I also think him being a veteran, be it only 3yrs in the leaque, is of value. If he ends up dropping to #3 or even #4 I think he can still contribute to the team. In any way he will not be hurting the other WR's developement.

Agreed. But the DJ haters are out in full-force. They cheer for the underdog (in this case, Guy or Gettis) during the preseason.

I'll love watching Jarrett explode (catch the ball and immediately get tackled) for 35 yards a game as much as the next guy, don't get me wrong. I'm told this is his year!

I would say Jarrett is as much an underdog as any of the others. I've rooted for him the past three years.

Fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.
