I looked at some stats from years past....(these are the only recent preseason team stats available on NFL.com)

Preseason #1 Defenses....

2008 Tampa Bay finished 9th

2007 Baltimore finished 7th

2006 NYG finished 26th

So there does not appear to be any rhyme or reason to preseason rankings at all. Could be a top 10 defense, or could be a Giant turd.

Our running game should help Matt Moore again unless we get behind by a couple of TDs and that is where the uncertainty lies.He was fortunate last year that the running game was on and the fact we were always in the game.His test will be when he gets in a position where he has to pass to keep us in the game.

what people don't seem to see is that this season is shaping up to be perfect "fox" ball. a stout rushing attack and a relentless defense is all fox wants to play effective and most of the time ugly football. all this team needs from a qb is minimum mistakes and a big arm.

I agree.All that is expected of Moore is throw the occasional strike and not make mistakes.

My biggest worry is that we do end up with the worst offense and the best defense. It'll be a long and fruitless season if that's the case.

There's just so little correlation between the pre-season and the regular season in most cases. Locally, we were working out a lot of folks that normally won't see the field and rotating guys pretty quickly, which can be good for a defense and devastating for an offense. Hopefully things are settled in now.

Defensively, I believe that we have some great personnel in place, but even more so, the pre-season has shown that the philosophy and tactics behind that defense are very sound. I wasn't that thrilled about Ron Meeks coming to Carolina before last season. I just didn't want to see an undersized defense like the Colts played here -- it just wasn't that smash mouth persona we had going. Man, I was wrong.

I believe in Ron Meeks' skills and player preparation abilities. He proved last year he could make it work with a patchwork D-line and Julius Peppers only playing when he danged well felt like it. This year, he's got one heck of a Dirty Dozen lined up (throw Captain Munnerlyn in with the starters) that almost no one would pick to be that good. Says a lot for them and for him as well.

On offense, I don't believe the TD drought can continue. It won't, either. Smitty is back and that brings the whole dang game up a level doesn't it? Double team him, triple team him -- he'll get his catches and see the end zone when he wants to. He'll also open up the running game and the other receivers just by his presence on the field.

And last, but not least, there's something the pre-season can never have that the regular season does: outcomes that matter. With the game in the balance, I believe we'll see the offense strike it up, see DWill and JStew break those 50 yarders, see Smith carry four defensive backs into the endzone and maybe even see Armanti run a punt back for a TD.

At least that's how it looks on Sept. 9th, hopefully I can be saying the same thing about the team in late January.

Interesting article. So if that holds true then the 7-9 or 8-8 predictions should be about right. Of course averages don't explain the range of variability which can be a 4 or 5 game swing. So even on average the history says we should win 7 or 8 games, some teams with 1 win in the preseason did much better while others did much worse.

Still very very good, no doubt. Louis is small, no 2 ways about it. He is likely a sub package lb in nickel packages or specialized WLB. Be fine ST gunner to start for sure. 6 foot flat and 220lb is pushing it for a starting LB. At 10 to 20lbs less than the other LBs he'd better be closer to the top in most timed drills. He's gonna be challenged when some of the wrs in the class can matchup bigger stronger faster, much less TE in the run game.  Yeah instinct matter and he has them, but that size is a massive red flag compared to many of the other LBS in this class.    Rodriguez is the LB that really climbed this week from a pure grit guy to great flash with athleticism people wrote off cause he was a QB at first at UVA. 18.4mph in the backpedal. Production the last 2 years were great. I'd be thrilled with him as the future mike.   Hill likely moved out of 51 and into the top 45 picks ( Ravens at 45 I can't imagine don't bite if he makes it there). Honestly Hill imo is a 1st rounder and I'd be ok with him as he fits the MLB we have missed the last few years. People would crow it's a reach but he's top 30 all-time I'm RAS for a LB at 9.9+ . Plus he was big time in big games when he was healthy. And that br a big check: meds.

      Miller, Melo, Coby, Moose, and Bridges all on the floor at the same time must be a nightmare for defenses lol. Switch one out for Kon and still a nightmare. Coby really does bring a true 6th man value and looks like he could start if Melo was out after only a few games of getting his feet wet.
