Question: Donovan McNabb as a Panther in 2011?

Seeing how things have gone this year and knowing that we'll still be rebuilding next year. Just as Foxy did when he came in, new coaches, especially with an unproven group of QBs and young players, bring in a veteran guy they can trust as they're developing their system and cultivating personnel to fit it, to provide some stability. They usually use this guy to keep things moving as they look towards the future...

For instance, they play this guy if there isn't a viable option for a franchise QB on the roster already (until they find one), or if there is a viable option for the future, they play the vet until he's ready. Rodney Peete was that stabilizing guy, came in and put up some decent numbers and won over a lot of fans for his grit and surprisingly decent play. We didn't have an answer on the roster when we brought him in - I can say that because most of the Weinke-ites are gone now lol. They played Peete and brought Jake in his second season... Jake didn't practice well, so Peete continued as the starter until Fox took a gamble in put him in to win the Jags game, the rest is history... According to what we were looking for, Jake became that QB for the future that day and lasted for about 6 years.

It's reported Donovan McNabb will not re-sign with the Skins after this season.

I thought we should've went after him this offseason, but we didn't, for obvious reasons. If there isn't a lockout, McNabb is 33 right now, and would be the perfect transition guy. I think McNabb is the type of QB that could play well until he's about 38 or so. I also think after what's happened the last two seasons with him, that his value is at an all-time low, so he should come fairly cheap. If Clausen is the guy, it will give us time to find out with the next coach. If not, the next coach will come in with a proven - winning- vet, and can draft his own guy with a what looks to be a Top 3 pick.

It will definitely shore up the position. Quite honestly, I have always admired McNabb and been a fan, so I would love the move and think it would help us through the difficult transition to a new system and possible further personnel overhaul that will come with a new staff. Thoughts?

Depends on the coach and scheme I guess... isn't he a WCO QB?

yeah he is, but like you said it depends on who we bring in after fox and co. is gone. I wouldn't mind having him here at all, he's definitely a better option than anything we have right now.

Depends on how much he wants to pay for. Reliable backup QB type who will start at the position would get around 7 million or so. McNabb is probably still under the illusion that he deserves a top 5 QB salary.

Great idea but isn't going to work money wise.

      Can we get to 9-8?

      A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.

      I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.

      Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
