Criteria for the new coach.

Awesomeness!!

If I hear Bill Cowhers rusty ass name in this debate one more time I will bust a nut. He might be the last thing we need.

We need a young coach to coach our young team. Did you see the guy that kicked our asses today? Yeah. He should be energetic, a poo talker, a in your face kind of guy.

A guy like Cowher, or a Dungy (I've heard that name as well) might get us featured on Sportscenter a little more, but if thats what Jerry, and or the fans are worried about then we are a long way off from ever being good again.

We are all entitled to our opinions. Either way I will trust the football people making the decisions. That being said, I would rather see somebody come in who has NFL headcoaching experience and proven himself. I do not want to see or take the chance of a cooridinator getting his feet wet and first go as a HC with this team. That can just as easily turn into a disaster compared to the probability we are going to find the next great one.

I would love Dungy in a heartbeat but do not think that is going to happen. I think Cowher would earn the respect immediately from this current roster and can creat an environment here where this team can be consitently good - something this franchise has never had.

Going by the way Jerry has hired coaches, Capers (Defensive), Seifert (Offensive), John Fox (Defensive), the next coach will be an offensive minded coach.
Seiffert was the 49ers DC before he was the HC there.

The next coach will want to run a 4-3, because that fits our personnel. That doesn't necessarily mean cover-2, but I wouldn't be surprised if we get another cover-2 guy.

The next coach will probably be more committed to an open offense, because that sells tickets and after the Fox years the fans will be leery of someone who runs a conservative offense again. A WCO wouldn't surprise me a bit.

The next coach is going to say very nice things about Jimmy Clausen and Armanti Edwards during the interview process. He will probably ask for immediate help at defensive tackle and possibly cornerback (if he's not a cover-2 advocate).

The next coach is going to be outgoing and interesting. Even if we get someone who coaches just like Fox on the sidelines, he will be the anti-Fox in interviews.

The next coach will be asked about where he wants to look for assistants. Anyone who mentions a team with a history of losing (like Cleveland or Buffalo) will be immediately dismissed from consideration.

Be open minded, and understand that points sells seats unless you have a 2000ish Ravens D.

Willing to get a good WR's and QB"s coach, and try like hell to develop a great QB, and passing attack.

Run a 4-3, but be much more aggressive. IMO we have had such a roster shake up/rebuild phase that I don't think switching to the 3-4 would be as tough as most on this board. However with more teams going 3-4, those players are going to be tougher and tougher to find. 3-4 DE's and NT's are really rare players.

    • I think you have to factor in that we're still not an attractive proposition for Head Coaches. You're not getting the cream of the crop if you fire Canales a year after winning the NFC South, especially considering the situation he walked into.
    • Yeah, I was about to say I hope he's doing okay health-wise because he's not looking good in that pic.
    • Honestly, I dont  think he should be on the hot seat yet. A bad start to next year, then yes. Despite our mistakes on play calling this past season, we played better than anticipated overall. Bryce showed improvement and maturity (although still not nowhere close to our expectations). Better record and 2-15 to 5-12 to 8-9. Despite what we feel the stats dont lie we are improving by 3 wins a year. Could 11-6 be our expectation. That's a high bar but at the rate we are going, thats what its looking like. We all want to see a 5-12 to a 13-4 record but we are methodically moving up. Success doesnt happen overnight (well in most cases).  IMO we are struggling mostly on the defensive end. LB and edge are our biggest weakness. I see Bryce making improvements (even though I was a Bryce hater) next year. Biggest concern is LT on offense. How to fix this? We need a big name edge or to trade up and get a big name edge or LB and pick up one in FA and draft one. Also if in the 3rd we can pick up a TE. Dont know if Sanders is the answer or Tremble (even though I love Trembles blocking and power after the catch). If these two can get their footwork together they would be great. Maybe all they need is a better TE coach. And if Brooks can stay healthy and be the back we thought he could be, man that would be great
