NFLPA Response to Owners Desire for 18-Game Season

Except all the juniors will stay in school. Talent wise, it will be the weakest draft in history

I think timing will be everything. If there is a rookie salary cap in the new CBA, there may be a record number of underclassmen jumping into the league, much like what happened in the NBA a few years back, possibly trying to avoid getting caught in the new cap.

If I'm not mistaken, the remainder of the CBA actually drops dead on March 1, almost 2 months before the draft. I'm not sure how long a college kid can wait to declare or change his mind, considering the combine is in February. It's really going to come down to a time-line of when things will happen or have to happen.

i don't think that will happen at all. there might be a few that will, but more than enough players will come out. the level of talent in that draft class won't be much different than it would have otherwise.

players will want to come out for fear of dropping off in performance or getting hurt and losing money and they will still be getting paid a ridiculous amount of money for what they do.

I was about to make a thread asking this, but I figured I should put it in here since this thread is about the lockout...

Everyone's asking about the 18 game extension and blah blah blah... but what I want to know is when this CBA will be done, with signatures and everything??? I mean, no one really knows, and it's honestly starting to freak me out. I can't imagine our country without football, it just doesn't seem American. And instead of owners complaining and players complaining about the money they'll lose out on if this deal doesn't go their way... are they not realizing they'll lose just as much, if not, more if this deal doesn't get done at all in time for the 2011 season to start??? I remember a lot of owners and players saying this deal would be done by mid November... and here we are, with no deal done. Things need to be set in motion. Someone needs a fire lit under their ass. I think it's time for the fans to stand up and say something!!! WHO'S WITH ME?!?!?!?!?!

from what i've seen/heard/know/whatever...in the event of a lockout the 2011 draft would go on like usual, but the 2012 draft order would be decided on by lottery.

that would be an awful way to handle it if it's just completely random. I'd at least hope they handle it the way NBA handles their picks.. giving the worst teams a better chance at picking higher, and giving the non playoff teams the first picks.

The idea is they won't be playing that year so there will be no worst team and no best team.

Duh.

Just a little note: The NFL tried two bye weeks for each team in 1993 (albeit a 16-game season), but the networks and the teams absolutely hated it. The networks complained that there were fewer marquee matchups each week, and the teams felt as though with two bye weeks it was harder to build momentum.

The two bye weeks and the expanded roster I would buy.

Increased salaries....bullshit. They are already paid for a years worth of service. They are not paid by the game.

Reduced workouts from 14 weeks to 4 weeks...what a crock of poo. Add two games and get 10 weeks off. The rest of us have to work 52 weeks a year.

The head of the NFLPA is a complete f**king idiot. He is going to do severe damage to the game of football before he is done.

Yeah, I was concerned when they elected a lawyer as the head of the NFLPA...

You can understand the arguement. The owners and leaque will be increasing their revenue/profit so it is somewhat logical for the players to want some of that. Plus despite being paid "for a years worth of service" - regular season games adds the most risk to their bodies, careers etc so again it is logical to want to be compensated for that. When they signed their contracts it was based on 16 regular season games. If the owners change that and the contract did not stipulate they could then the plays have a right to expect additional pay for those 2 new games.

Overall I am not saying either side is right. I just think the whole thing is b.s and in every sport it just bugs me they all just push it off and never reallly get into serious real talks until a lockout or strike occurs. I know that is part of negatiating but its stupid. Just get the deal done. Each side plays a vital role in what makes the NFL what it is.

    • Got to talk to Tiny Lister once back when I worked for AT&T.  He was a nice guy.
    • The team signed undrafted rookie JJ Weaver from Kentucky. The 25-year-old Weaver played six seasons in college (with injury waivers), and had 21.5 sacks. He was a three-time team captain for the Wildcats. To make room for him on the roster, the Panthers released outside linebacker Amare Barno. Barno, a sixth-round pick in 2022, tore his ACL late in the 2023 season and began last year on the physically unable to perform list. He had 3.0 sacks in three seasons, appearing in 29 games. Sad to see. He seemed to have a lot of potential when he was drafted. Injuries really derailed him though.
    • Ok so how does this make sense for Blake?  Honestly I like it for us.  I’m really high on Blake’s future like I’m sure the Canes FO is.  If he continues along the path he’s on, we’ll have a top 6 forward on a KK contract.
