Harbaugh / Luck Question #2

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Three assumptions. Assuming that Luck is the next John Elway or Peyton Manning. Assuming that there might be a rookie cap in place for next year's draft. And last but not least, assuming we have the number one overall pick. We have all the incentives in the world to trade down. If Luck is really a sure thing no matter where he goes, why wouldn't teams give massive compensation for the chance to draft a special guy at the most important position?

The Redskins got New Orlean's whole draft for Ricky Williams, and it boggles everyone's minds how the Redskins didn't become a dynasty after that. I'm not saying we will get the same for Luck (If we could, I'm sure everyone would be excited to basically trade Luck away:D), but we could get a first rounder for next year's draft along with the traded first this year, and a second and third round pick for this upcoming draft. Then with our first pick from the trade (let's say we traded down two or three picks) we draft Patrick Peterson. And now since we have two first rounders for the next draft because of the trade (Our annual pick and the traded first rounder), we trade away one of those to get back into this year's first round to draft Nick Fairley. Finally, we trade away either Stewart or Goodson and maybe add on our extra third round pick to get back in the first round, and draft Ryan Mallet.

Scenario: We trade with Cincinnati.

Bengals get: 1st overall pick

We get: 3rd or 4th overall pick, Bengals 2nd round, 3rd round, next year's 1st

Hopefully we win the bid for Logan Mankins when he hits the free agent market, if so, this scenario is picture perfect for rebuilding this team. Luck may be the best player in the draft, but he is just one guy. You get compensation for him, we pick up three pro-bowl ready guys. The extra first rounder for next year is for Alshon Jeffery. With this upcoming draft we rebuild the team. With next year's draft, or the year after that, we do whatever it takes to bring in Alshon Jeffery. He has the potential to be as good if not better than Andre Johnson.

You are completely high if you think another team will give up a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd just to move up 2-3 spots.

It's not just the offense a rookie QB has to learn, it's the speed of the game. If Luck is all that he's cracked up to be, then we want him of course. But there's no sense throwing him to the wolves if we don't have to.

And we'll have Clausen in his second year. Looking at his personal history, he made a massive improvement between his freshman and sophomore years in college, and he's continued to improve all season long.

So if I was the coach (and I'm not even a candidate), I would lean toward starting Clausen and seeing what he can do. Let Luck sit and learn the speed of the game in practice, and show other teams what can be had for a high pick, or a pick and a player.

Imagine what San Diego could have gotten for Brees if he wasn't hurt. Wouldn't you like to at least be in that position?

I dont think Luck will need to sit, especially with Harbaugh there. Matt Ryan, Flacco, Bradford, none of the good ones need to sit

It's not a question of needing to, it's a question of having the luxury to. If he can sit, then isn't it better to let him? He's young and still maturing physically, give him a chance to get better. And, at the same time, show off what you have to trade.

Worst case is that JC is just awful and we learn that we need a competent backup. Best case is he impresses to the tune of someone's first.

Back on track. It depends to me on the strength and health of our offensive line. If our line can somehow get back to 2008 form and can provide ample protection then by all means, I say start Luck from the get go. He then has both the benefits of decent protection and a run game ranging from competent to tops in the league. Combine that with what I certainly hope is going to be an innovative OC then I dont see any reason why Luck cant have similar success to McCoy and Bradford this year. At the very least, he could be Sanchez, make a lot of great plays but several stupid ones and ride the defense and run game into the playoffs. Worked pretty well for him now hasn't it?

Now, if our line isn't improved in the offseason and Otah still isn't healthy (would it really surprise you at this point?) then I say let Luck ride the bench for most of the year. Maybe give him a couple starts toward the end of the season for him to get his feet wet.

Did anyone watch the Arizona game yesterday?

There are teams that need Luck more than the Panthers I am afraid to say.

Only fans would assume that an organization would give up on a rookie like Clausen so quickly given the circumstances... zero running game until Gooden, rookie wide receivers..injuries.

Sure if another coach came, which almost certainly won't be Maize and Blue Harbaugh who has the perfect scenario to take his dream job at Michigan, he could draft Luck and punt Clausen and/or Pike. But you look at some of these other teams that obviously need a young quarterback.... Arizona, Seattle, Cinci, San Francisco... I find it hard to believe the Panthers would pass up a franchise DT to rebuild another year at QB. I could be very wrong, but IMO the logical move is to pick up a veteran QB and take a DL in the draft to replace Peppers.

My prediction is the new coach does EXACTLY what Shanahan is doing. Pick up a good veteran like McNabb... sign him to a long term deal... and then develop a young QB for a few years.
