2008 NY Giants DL

We need to draft Daquan Bowers for this exact reason. The 2008 Giants had three dominate DEs and we're able to shut down the greatest offense in NFL history in the Super Bowl. With the addition of Bowers we would have three extremely young and talented DEs who compare to that Giants DL.

Strahan 6'5 255

Umenyiora 6'3 261

Tuck 6'5 274

Hardy 6'4 277 (will be 23 years old next season)

Johnson 6'2 275 (will be 25 years old next season)

Bowers 6'5 280 (will be 21 years old next season)

If we can get an everydown type DT in free agency, probably not Ngata but a very good player and a run stopper in the mold of what Hollis Thomas gave us in 2009-10 and we will be back to having a dominate DL, a DL that will give Brees, Ryan and Freeman nightmares for years to come especially if they are coached by Rivera.

We can use our DL very similar to what the Giants do. Use Bowers in the Justin Tuck role and let him shift inside on passing downs in a very similar role as the one Justin Tuck plays. Hardy comes in off the bench and keeps everyone fresh.

Yes I know we need a QB but I don't like the options in this draft and I think we will get someone via free agency, I also think we will get a WR in free agency maybe Vincent Jackson if Rivera/Ramsdell can lure him here and if not him someone good. While I wouldn't hate it if we picked AJ Green it would be overkill IMO with the #1 pick and not having a franchise QB or OL there we need to build our DL up.

QB - FA, Clausen, Moore

RB - Williams, Stewart, Goodson

FB - Fiumetta (if we still have a FB)

WR - Smith, Gettis, Lafell, FA (Fa could be anything from Jackson to a legit veteran #3 WR nothing worse then that)

TE - Rosario (think he becomes a star in a new offense), King

OL - Gross, Wharton, Kalil, Dude, Otah (draft and sign depth here)

DE - Johnson, Bowers, Hardy

DT - FA, FA run stopper

MLB - Beason, Conner

OLB - Anderson, Davis, Norwood

CB - Gamble, Munnerlyn (sign a #2 or #3 caliber vet)

S - Martin, Godfrey

Basically I'm saying build up the trenches and the results will bear fruit. I think Rivera goes this route.

It's always a possibility. But with Smith on the decline (and we aren't even sure if he will be a Panther next season), 2 WR's with the potential to be "good" and 1 project. I still think AJ Green is BPA. You have to grab him and give him a Veteran QB to work with (Orton IMO). If Rivera brings a West Coast with him it would greatly benefit Clausen. I also see the view that we have spent 3 high round picks on WR's and need to work on a different position. But AJ Green will eventually be at the level Calvin Johnson is (he is often compared to him, but who knows). All I'm saying is, we need a clear cut #1 for the future.

But the only truth is to know that we know nothing. It could go a different way entirely.

I don't know about Bowers in particular, he has a very Peppers-like ability to completely disappear during games. If I'm taking a defensive lineman # 1 overall I'm taking Fairley from Auburn, he's been much more consistent than Bowers and has shown the ability to absolutely take over games. In my opinion, it also helps that Fairley is doing what he does in the SEC while Bowers is doing what he does in the ACC.

Our team had a dominate D-line for years with Peppers, Rucker, Jenkins and Buckner. Look at what the Seahawks did with an improved Dline, Without that D-line Brees would have been able to make more plays and blow out the Hawks but the D line dominated the saints. I have noticed teams that aren't that good but have a great D-line have made many upsets in the playoffs, The Giants being the prime example. Also most teams that have won the superbowl have all had great D lines. However I still have faith that Brown can become a decent DE and Hardy looks like he can become the starter on the other side of Johnson, thats three good DEs, DT is our need on defense.
