Our 3rd for Kolb?

To the "but he's better than Clausen" crowd, here's the issue.

You sign a free agent guy like Volek, Bulger or someone else, and they don't pan out, you lose nothing but a roster spot.

You give up something in trade for a guy like Kolb or you use the #1 pick on a guy like Locker, Newton or Gabbert and they don't pan out, then you gave up the roster spot plus the pick you used in the draft or trade that could have gone somewhere else.

And as mentioned elsewhere, when you need a backup plan for a question mark, you don't use another question mark. The safer choice is the free agent route. No, you won't get a franchise guy that way, but you're not getting a franchise guy the other way either.

I'm becoming more and more of a fan of trading down and trying to get Cam Newton. I have done a complete 180 on this (wasn't a fan). But the more I think about it the more I think about his poential to be a combination of Ben Roethlisberger and Mike Vick. We would definitely have to let him sit for at least a year but if we could give him time to learn an offene tailored to what he does best....he sky is the limit for that kid.

Trade down and draft Newton...the guy is going to be the next great QB. Draft Newton and spend the rest of the draft trying to find some DT help.

Bring in someone to mentor Clausen and Pike (as should have been done last year) and see what they can do. If they suck, then we go after Luck next year.

This team still has tons of voids to be filled due to the veteran purge of last offseason. I say address all the issues you can this year, see what happens with a better coached group of young QB's operating with a solid vet (Bulger, Volek).

  • 2 weeks later...

he's on pace to be the next billy volek. overrated QB who didn't like competition and asked to be traded when he wasn't flat out given the job. he'll be a back up on some team for years and there will be fans of some teams clamouring for him to come in as the starter because they remember that one season that he didn't suck years ago so that means he should be good there.

your living fantasy...you do not know that... you have a much greater percentage to get a franchise qb in the draft. Me thinking that cam or any other qb can be a franchise qb (which i assume you disagree with) holds the same weight as you thinking those qb wont be franchise qb... we dont know.

Pick cam get a fa qb... just wanted to put this out there nick F. isnt even the number 1 DT... according to mayock.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
