Panthers signed Miami WR Jacolby George.
George (5’11, 172) is an undersized receiver whose pro day results showed less-than-desirable speed (4.60 40-yard dash) for a player of his size. He held a starting role over each of the last two seasons, totaling 111 receptions for 1,630 yards and 16 touchdowns while averaging 14.7 YPR. He played primarily on the outside as a starter (88.8 percent snaps out wide, per PFF), but his size and lack of top-end speed are unlikely to play well on the outside at the next level. George drew several careless penalties throughout his career and was nearly dismissed from Miami after the 2023 season. He’ll likely get a chance to earn a role as a returner (20 career punt returns) wherever he lands, but there’s a lot that will need to break right for George if he hopes to earn a roster spot in the future.

But I thought that's why we took that particular RB, because he'd also be a returner for us.

A signing bonus like this means they expect him to make the final roster, just like Coker last year.  If they already think he's making the roster as a returner, I'm looking at that Etienne pick very differently now.

    • I could use less of Steve Smith's opinion in my life.
    • It probably would be. Given that most 6th and 7th rounders aren't NFL game day material except on the Panthers, the pick might improve us slightly with a drafted player, but I'd like to see us actually be able to open up the field. I do think some of our offensive problem stem from defenses aren't afraid of Bryce's arm. They cover a short field and that makes life a lot easier for them.  If it doesn't work though, unless we get rid of the scouting department and whatever drafting algorithm Dave is making us use, it won't really matter anyway.
    • I think the Baker/Darnold thing has been overblown. QBs that struggle with the team that drafts them and go on to find success elsewhere often do end up going to multiple new teams before they figure it out and/or find the right situation. It just so happened that we traded for both guys in back-to-back years and neither player had quite figured it out yet. Baker, I think, needed more time and a better supporting cast. Darnold, I think, benefitted from a year on the bench in San Francisco a ton. I don't really have any ill will towards either of them. I think they both came here with the best intentions after coming from difficult circumstances; unfortunately the Panthers were - and still are, it seems - also in the process of figuring things out.
