Jadeveon Clowney upset about being released

I don't think its anything deeper than cap savings.  We are very tight in terms of cap space.

And cutting Clowney saves more than just about anyone else we could reasonably cut on the dline.

That being said, I am a little concerned that we are going to be relying so much on unproven rookies.

I mean, if Clowney was playing lights out, an edge making $10m is a bargain.  He would not be upset if there were other teams with open wallets waiting to give him a 2-3 year deal.  He was a stop gap, and now our developmental talent needs some sunlight.  If Clowney were to stay and have a good year, he is a 33-year old free agent.  If our two draft picks get a combined 12-15 sacks, then you know that they got more production at the edge position for less money and we are building.  Clowney has flashed.  He is a great specimen and tremendous football player.  His mindset is not a dawg, however.

I wouldn't even call him a tremendous football player. He was a guy way overdrafted and way overpaid for years when he had the allure of "potential". Now that that's gone he's just been getting treated like the JAG that he is.

Yea safe to say journeyman rotational edge rusher wasn’t what they were hoping for out of the first overall pick.

Great move Dan Morgan......dudes feeling himself too much. "I feel like I played well"

5.5 sacks don't cut it IMO for a starting OLB/edge.

Like most I would rather the hungry younger players get after it instead.

To be fair, he was basically the only non-PS level player on our roster at DE/EDGE for the majority of the season.

Wonnum and Patrick Jones as the vets/mentors in the room is concerning. Not much else in FA left either.

Wonnum and Patrick Jones are solid starters and should be able to play well as we allow the rookies to get their feet wet. Between those 4 and Barno needing to be active for special teams reasons how was Clowney gonna get his reps? Good on the front office for pulling the band aid off now because I guarantee you by mid-season Clowney would be complaining about playing time and production exactly like he did in Cleveland.

Clowney needs to learn that teams view him as a productive veteran stop gap with attitude issues and no team is building their edge room around him.

That's basically it. Some here talking about this and that. At this point in his career, teams already know what they're getting. The first round stuff has long past. He's been a solid player nonetheless, even for us. But there always comes a time when age begins to catch up with you.  We're obviously making the room younger, and that's the priority as it should be. Joining a contender as a good rotational piece is probably the best thing that he can do if he wants to make an impact and maybe even get a ring.

This lazy bum has been useless since his  second year at SC.

After looking at the new cap numbers (23 million) I agree with the move to cut Clowney, but in my opinion, your assessment couldn’t be further from the truth. According to PFF, Clowney was # 3 against the run as an OLB/Edge last year, and while he only had 5.5 sacks he was #13 for generating pass rush.  He was surrounded by practice squad players for the majority of the year.

In addition, very few players have played 10+ years in the NFL AFTER micro fracture knee surgery. He lost his bend and a lot of his athleticism his rookie year when he got the surgery.

That is what you consider a lazy bum ??????

Like I said, few if any have done it.  Dude wanted to be here. It’s home for him. It amazes me how some of you Huddlers treat players that rep the Carolina Panthers.

Players surveys and player sentiment around the league will hurt us when it comes to bring in that prize free agent player that gets us over the top. Don’t be confused when they sign elsewhere. I personally love the south and the smaller city vibe, but we are competing against some prize destinations with big markets and low taxes.

    • And even worse you have injuries force you to play anther one dimensional train wreck combine that with Orlov being no were close to as advertised and boom you have 3 defensemen being dressed who couldn't defend my 96 year old grandmother. That said next year having Slavin,Miller,Nikishin,Chatfield gives you the best shutdown d man in the league two large athletic HIGH offensive potential D who can take away time and space....   The more I think about it the more I like this seasons approach, if you bring back burns or aquire anther large RHS with length you have 5 D all over 6'2 and 210 with three of them having great offense too, make no mistake they want size and skill on the blue line now and its almost 100% directed at getting past FL.
    • Honestly the 2024 draft class(minus brooks). All are in line to be starters, expect crumedy who's fighting for a 53.  Still that class was looking terrible, is now looking like 4 starters and maybe 1 depth. Anytime you draft 2 starters and a key depth piece its a good draft. 4 starters are rare and that's with brooks who could have made 5 starters if not for awful luck.  That draft also helped land starter Michael Jackson in a round about way, big bonus..
