Well we would give him a fair contract!! The Bengals should be ashamed of themselves

Something happened. Anyone drafting him knew they were drafting a boom or bust guy who had to a lot of potential but hadn't done much of anything on an actual football field. Something happened between the draft and now to make them have buyer's remorse on that pick.

Yeah it's kind of like they don't want him on the team anymore for some reason

Here something else to consider. We're already heavily reliant on rookies at EDGE rusher with two 2nd round rookies on the roster. If you add a third that's going to be three rookies on that unit and you're going to have to bounce a vet. That scenario had Wonnum included in the trade along with a 2nd and a 4th. Three rookies on one unit just seems like a bad idea. Rookies need a lot of coaching and development and you're going to be stretching that thing while also requiring them to play a lot of snaps.

How can you not afford a guy you drafted?  They are slotted contracts?  This never happens.  This isn't baseball lol.

Best I heard its a clause the bungals want to add. It prevents them form paying the full guaranteed amount if triggered. No one knows the details of the clause, but guesses are it relates to off-field stuff.

Stewart is in the right here. Before they signed burrow, chase, and Higgins they were the cheapest team in the league bar none. Unlike tepper or jarrah Jones or any other NFL ownership, all Mike brown owns is the beagals. Every other owner has many other money making businesses, not bungals.

I still remember when Brenston Bunker was starting on WFNZ and he told the story about the beagals telling him to pick a used cup form a huge pile, LOLS! They been on hard knocks and I remember Marvin lewis telling the players not to take home Gatorade bottles........* but in that case, I believe some players were taking a back pack and filling it up with drinks. Still you make millions(around 200million) in net profit and Im sure coke gave the team those bottles, still...

Its a 32 team billion business, someone has to the cheapest.....Panthers were around the next cheapest team before tepper bought them and he has POURED millions upon millions into the team. He bought a bubble that Richardson never would, so the team had to gather in a old building during the rain. He spent millions on coofus machines that he just gave away like the bubble. Tepper made that AC trailer a thing. I've trashed him about his concerts and taking away end zone seats from fans. But the guy will spend money any way in efforts to better the team, dang I just remembered the deal he gave Rhule- more than Andy Reid at the time.

I know results have not came, but Id 100% take Tepper over Mike brown as a owner.

Poverty franchise behavior.  If you don't like him as a 3rd rounder then why'd you draft him there?  As others have said, they likely found out some new information and have buyer's remorse.

Our FO didn't give DJ Johnson a hard time for being a bad pick.

Yea, I don't know why they are insisting this new clause to be be included. (well its money, its always money). Just the issue, or one of the big issues, is no other team is doing it. They are trying to start a trend..... guess what the team picked right after and before stewart didn't not have this clause in the contract and they have already signed. They totally look like the bad guy in all this and like I posted before, their rep is awful among agents.

Mike Brown uses his daughter negotiate contracts cause she took law courses. Look it up, many say if she is doing that, she is the GM... I bet you can not guess who the GM is....... save you some time, there isn't one.... so maybe it is the daughter....

Yeah, when you draft a guy you have to understand and realize you're going to be giving him a contract commensurate with that draft position. It is what it is. If you don't want to do that for anyone on the board, trade down. Hell, pull a Vikings and sit on your ass and let the time run out and the next team up pick. LOL! But don't draft the guy and then think you're going to get away with some contract shenanigans. Hell, his agent can't allow it looking out for his own interests. If Stewart was willing to sign a deal wildly out of step with the norm on a bad way his agent would probably tell him he's got a walk. If I want to sign future 1st round draft prospects I can't be a part of this.

It sounds like they are having second thoughts about drafting him and tried to insert some weird unique clause into his contract.  They screwed up and now they have to pay the piper.

Because they think he's gonna bust and they want to be able to wiggle out of the deal. Everyone knew he was boom or bust. I think something happened since the draft that makes them think he's a bust.

I say the blame goes to the GM, in this case its Mike Browns daughter since shes the chief contract person. The bungals don't even have a person listed as GM, cause that would cost more money to pay them. I've heard they also pay scouts the least among teams too...

This is just classic bungals having a repeat like in the "old" holdout days. They were the worst team about holdouts too........again blame the GM daughter. The deal is I believe she is just doing what Mike Brown wants, to save every penny possible.... Mike use to send her to owners meetings too, i bet she flew coach on southwest....

I don't think it's any weird or unique clause, it's the offset language, same thing so many contract disputes are over.

It just means that including it, if a player is cut and then signed by another team, the original team would be able to subtract how much they're getting paid by the new team from what they still owe him on their guaranteed money.

For example, it's why Russell Wilson signed for the minimum last year with the Steelers as that was included in his Denver contract.  So if he signed with the Steelers for $1 million, he'd get $1 million less from the Broncos, if it was $2 million, he'd get $2 million less, basically he couldn't make any more money than he was already going to make, so you sign for the minimum to not take unnecessary cap room from your new team while giving extra cap room to your old one.

The problem with trying to include it in rookie deals is that a team trying to include it, it says they think they don't really believe the player will make it 4 years with the team before they cut them.  And this usually comes up with one or two rookies in most seasons, the difference is it's usually handled much more quietly and not as public and ugly as this one.

The other difference is that it's happening with the Bengals, which I believe I saw are one of the few (or only?) team that doesn't have protections for rookies in rookie and mini camps to be able to participate even if they haven't signed their contract yet.  The other teams have injury protections that allow them to still play, but the Bengals do not, which is also why this one is so public and ugly, as most the time this happens, the rookie is still participating in the rookie and subsequent mini camps, giving them more time to get the contract done before training camp when they'd then hold out.
