If Coker picks up where he left off last year he needs to quickly replace XL in the starting lineup. We might have need to use XL like the Vikings used Cordarelle Patterson. We may have drafted a great athlete who just isn't a WR. Okay, whatever. Don't cry about it. Just try to figure out how to best utilize him and understand that yeah, he's never gonna live up to 1st round billing. Again, whatever. Something is better than nothing. Try to figure it out.

Patterson was a great football player.  Bad WR.  We see that a lot on defense and at WR.  XL can still be of value if we had a good staff.

Yea, when Coker comes back, I’d work on phasing XL out. You’re a bit more optimistic on him than I am. I don’t see him lasting long in this league at all. Sucks, because I like XL the person. Seems like a genuine guy, comes from the area my mother is from, just a likeable guy. He’s just not a WR, and I don’t think he can be one.

He's probably not. But Patterson wasn't either and he's still in the league as basically an offensive utility player relying primarily on athleticism and playmaking ability despite not really fitting in at any real position.

You explain how Renfrow gets his grade in the what if the other guy actually did his job world of PFF?

That ball to TE Saunders is a very difficult ball.  Thats not a gimme that’s supposed to get logged like the XL foot down ball.  It wasn’t a 50/50 im the sense 2 guys were going up for the same ball.  It’s just a low % play.  A TE gonna collect that type ball maybe half the time.

I’m not here to say Bryce’s grade makes sense he made me physically ill with some of those decisions.

Bryce completely screwed Renfrow. But they supposedly grade route running, run blocking, etc. Renfrow wasn’t great. But he had chances to make plays and didn’t. The passes didn’t do him any favors though and one almost got him killed.

I do hate to say this but a real NFL tight end makes that catch most of the time. Now Ian Thomas, Chris Manhertz, Hayden Hurst, Tommy Tremble? What we are used to seeing? Yeah they might catch that ball 25-50% of the time lol

I think league wide, there just aren’t a lot of TEs where that’s a high % play.  Are there even 10 really good rec TEs in the entire NFL right now? Might be but you would probably have to really think about it.  Just seems like a tough ask to count as a should be.

PFF counts it as a straight up drop.

Oh and the PFF brainiacs were breaking down the upcoming game.   Dude said if there is one thing we know about Bryce Young…..he wants to throw the ball downfield

wut?

I think they must have let AI takeover their work or some poo.  It doesn’t sound like they watch Bryce Young.  Who would describe Bryce like that lol

Reminds me of Bryce's rookie year. Jonathan Vilma was calling the game and he said on live TV, something along the lines of, "Bryce wants to show off that big arm of his."

Bryce sucks, but he has been throwing it downfield somewhat consistently over the last year.  12th in ADOT in Week 1, last year he was 5th/27th among QBs with at least 50% of their teams dropbacks (only Herbert, Love, Darnold, and Lamar Jackson were ahead).  He was 2nd in Big Time Throw % too.

Last week he had 4 20+ yard throws (0 completions) and 9 10-19 yards.  Compare that to say, Jared Goff, who was in a similar spot last week as far as needing his team to rally and score - he only had 1 throw of 20+ yards and 6 10-19 yards.

So Bryce is definitely a poor downfield thrower, but he has been a willing one, especially since returning from his benching.

This is definitely true. He's gone from one extreme to another in that now, he'll ignore a wide-open checkdown to throw into triple coverage.

Is Xavier Legette secretly Laviska Shenault?

Both are 6'1" and about 220-225 pounds. Exact same arm length (31 7⁄8), hand size (9 in).

During his best year in college, Legette broke out: 71 receptions, 1,255 receiving yards, 7 receiving touchdowns. In Shenaults best collegiate year, he had 86 catches for 1,011 yards and 6 receiving touchdowns, plus 5 rushing touchdowns.

Controversial opinion, the Panthers should use Xavier Legette in a Laviska Shenault-style role because both are nearly identical in size and physical build, with comparable strength and versatility that make them well-suited for schemed touches, including gadget plays and even snaps out of the backfield. If it makes you feel better, you could call it the Deebo Samuel role.

Legette hasn’t shown at this level yet he can break tackles like Shenault

I mean, Bryce Young is literally in an offense that is constructed to be about the deep ball.    He just is bad at it and it goes against he how naturally plays/skill set.   It's also why his completion % is garbage every year and why he leads the NFL in bad throw % since arriving.  He doesn't fit the O scheme and what it asks.

The offensive scheme requires it.   It would be like putting rookie Cam in some small ball O and saying the stats back he likes doing that.  It would have gone against everything he was at that time.  It was his worst ball.  But Bryce Young doesn't like it nor is he good at it.   No one that watches Bryce Young play football would actually say he wants to go downfield with the ball and that his thing.....that some deep stat narrative that gets pushed.

It's why he went 0-4 on basically easy deep shots Sunday.  Big time throws can be a 5 yards slant.  It's bologna.  And PFF would award Bryce  as the best deep passer going 1/4 over some dude chucking it for multiple scores.
