Former Panther Barno Arrested

Wow.  Reading about DJ’s release got me to thinking and I was like, “I wonder where Barno is now?” because I always liked his potential.  Welp…  he’s nowhere, and will remain nowhere after this.

So he received no interest from the other 31 teams for training camp or practice squad opportunities. Sounds accurate for someone our team cut.

TBH, I was a bit surprised before I saw the article that no one took a chance on him even for the PS, simply because of his physical tools.  I think we had him playing gunner at one point.  He has edge rusher size and runs a 4.3.  So yes, the fact he was in our roster for multiple seasons, gets cut, and doesn’t even get a PS invite elsewhere tells us all we need to know.

Times have never been worse as a Panthers fan.

My first reaction was “that’s true” but I think the masses are finally seeing the light on Bruce and we are coming out of it.

Some guys just aren't football players. Really seems like you could find some way to use an athlete like that but at the same time, if they can't play football they just can't play football. It is what it is.

Yeah, wait until Tepper decides that his "hands off" approach isn't working and has Nicole run the next draft.

We draft a lot of those guys. Our front office has a type they like to draft. Big, fast, etc. and we don’t pay attention to skill because we always think we can coach athletes up to be football players. It hasn’t worked out once and normally our un athletic UDFAs out play the guys we draft.

The only exception we made was drafting Bryce Young. It was the only time we ignored physical attributes. You can’t make all of this up.

I am kind of the opposite. I mean he did this. He knows he did it. He isn’t totally an idiot, not close. It is his ego doing this and maybe it getting smacked down by the results of his meddling will embarrass him enough that he will leave it to the football people he overpays to make these judgements.
But that is probably a fantasy

Agreed. IMO it's the Rhule effect and obsession with RAS, or even its predecessor, the 'Al Davis obsession with speed'. It's a college-type approach that leads to a ton of misses. Hurney did some of it too but seemed to be more along the lines of thinking guys could easily switch positions.

I remember the times of how the Huddle bitched about not drafting enough athletes. Then we switched to purely athletes with no abilities.

Oh how the turns have tabled.

Prospect evaluation is always going to be more art than science. The guys who have all the measurables and all the production go really high in the draft. Once you get past those handful of the prospects all the rest have warts and you have to sort through it and try to figure out the ones who are going to be able to overcome their shortcomings on paper. And even then, some of those picture perfect prospects on paper are STILL gonna bust.

    • Maybe he is just a drama queen living his best life
    • Per usual with Tepper's Panthers the entire approach feels wrong. Tepper wants in on all the stuff he should be seeing himself out of and then wants to be hands off on the stuff that he needs to be stepping in on.
    • Yeah, it’s mind blowing.  Don’t get me wrong, the combine is fun.  It’s cool to see guys put up these crazy, superhuman numbers, but honestly, the tape doesn’t lie.  The times where the combine measurements meets the on-field production, that’s rare, and those guys are guaranteed stars.  In my observations over the years, it seems there are a lot more guys who don’t measure the best or well at all, but they’re just damn good at football.  NGL, it’s why I’m high in Scourton and Princely, bc they don’t have the craziest athletic measurements, but when you watch them, they have those innate football movements, and they look faster and stronger than combine measurements would indicate.  ATP in my life, like I said, if I have to choose between on-field appearance and production versus crazy raw athletic scores with potential, give me the football player every time.  Hopefully Dan has learned this now.
