Is Canales digging his own grave?

Canales has the same problem just about every other HC in this league have: they are too stubborn in what they want to do. Sometimes, he can contain himself and plays to the strengths of this team. But then his playcalls get way too cute, he forgets that our running game exists and he goes for these low percentage play calls that are a waste of a down.

That said, a new coach won't necessarily solve anything, either. They'll just have their own sets of flaws to complain about (Fox was overly conservative. Ron had poor clock management, etc.).

Biggest issue was the team essentially trusting Evero as the adult in the room IMO. Sure, Don Capers corpse is in the building and Canales has coaching friends...but we trusted a rookie HC, with minimal OC experience himself, who brought in guys with minimal experience, and didn't put a single former HC/"adult" in the room to help. 

Toss in Canales calling plays. Toss in Evero being Evero. Add in Bryce, Tepper, and the Panthers shitshow in general...and it's one hell of an uphill battle (that we largely created ourselves). 

I think Canales can be a good HC and has shown signs of promise with some of his bumps in the road, but we also didn't use Tepper's checkbook properly from the start. 

McVay had Wade Phillips. We needed our Wade Phillips.

However, consider the decision to not get a better backup QB and practice squad QB falls squarely  on him   He is both HC and OC

I won't fault DC on "inheriting" Young, but he was hired mainly to develop BY

However, Bryce isn't our main issue with the offense

Since hiring DC, we've used two 1st round picks on WR (T-mac is unicorn, XL is inconsistent)

Have the highest paid O-line (injuries are effecting this unit)

And a back to back 200 yard RB in Rico

 

However, DC consistently plays the wrong player over the better player (Corbett>Mays, Chuba>Rico)

His play calling gets too cute at times, his redzone offense is abysmal, and time clock management is awful.

We've spent too much draft picks and resources on the offensive side of the ball for our "offensive minded head coach" and this is the results we get

I attribute maybe 20% of that to Canales and that's in the sense of forgetting Rico exists, and doing the same with Hendon Hooker. The other 80% is evenly split among a swiss-cheese run defense and a QB who had no business wearing a helmet after halftime, if we're honest.

I would probably attribute something closer to 70% of the problems with DC and his playcalling.

I felt similar, that he fuged it up off the bat. Should have started with Rico.

My problem with most of the last few regimes is their dogged determination to keep doing what isnt working.

All those years ago when I played ball through high school my coaches were all of the mold of "just out execute your opponent and it doesnt matter if they know what youre going to do".  I get the sense thats what our last few head coaches believed - if we would just play our game better, it wouldnt matter what the other guys did. Yeah they stopped that B Gap run 7 times but if we do it better on attempt 8...

especially given the specific matchup.   I mean, running Rico at someone all day isn't going to yield the same outcome each week.  But last Sunday, that was the obvious move.   We elected to not to lean on the Bills the one way we could.

He most definitely is. Only reason there are any other issues is due to injuries depleting depth that was there.
