You never really know how a person will react after you hand them a check for $30million.

You bring up the exact reason you can count on Newton to work very hard to be the best he can be given his big contract will be his second one not his first. With a rookie salary cap (there won't be a CBA without one I think) he might make 25 with 10 guaranteed. Who knows. But you can bet that in three or 4 years when his initial contract is up, he will either cash in big or fade away based on his current production or at least potential. In any case he would be a fool not to work hard and give 100%. And nothing out there suggests he is fool or stupid. Other than a few poorly chosen words, he has done all the right things. This weekend should prove very important as will his visit to Charlotte.

So you are saying we are going to "underpay" for Cam upfront and run the risk of him sitting for two years, struggling for one, improving the next and THEN paying a ransom to him and his dad for the future services of one Cameron Newton?

That wasn't even close. Wow, it almost unbeleivable that you would get that of what I said. You have unique thinking for sure.

What we were discussing was that he will be highly motivated to perform well and do so as soon as he can. And we can get his very best at a great discount given his rookie cap. We can take a shot on him without draining the bank and have 3 years to work with him before we have to decide whether he is worth the big bucks. If he comes in and plays well, you got him for 3 years at a big discount. If he takes more time to develop as some people fear, you still aren't out Russell type money and would be quicker to pull the trigger again since what you would be paying Clausen and Newton would only be the signing bomus that they gave Bradford last year. But everyone hopes that between the two of them, one will become your franchise guy.

See how that is much different??:D

the whole "bradford did it so anyone can, too!" is already old and tired and it's only had a couple months of use

Yeah, it's almost as old as the comparisons to JaMarcus Russell, Vince Young, Akili Smith or any other black QB people can think of who ended up struggling in the NFL.

He was referring to Bradford not playing under center in college, but was able to make the transition as a rookie with the rams.

This is what baffles me, Bradford did take snaps from under center, not exclusively of course, but he knew how to do it and didn't have to learn it from scratch at the next level.

Also, comparing spread QB's to run option QB's is just dumb, IMO. The concepts are completely different.

Or $50 million. I think this is the biggest red flag for our pick, and one nobody knows for sure until the check is cashed.

If I am totally honest with myself, this might be the biggest reason I fear Newton. His character issues, father's wheeling and dealing, Icon comment, "press only" workout, coming out early, even his mother sitting in the stands at the National Championship game with a rhinestone and gold glitter Cam jersery, just reminds me of Brian Bozworth/Jamarcus Russell.

That is how I feel, and whether it is based on what will happen or not, there is probably a reason for thinking so. If you think his inner circle is not all about getting paid, you are not hearing and seeing what I am.

I see us taking Gabbert before Newton. Newton is the The Golden Calf of Bristol of this draft--not just by college systems or skill set because Newton is better, but by the hype. The only difference? The Golden Calf of Bristol did less to attract attention. He didn't turn down an interview or film segment, but Newton is holding workouts for the press and making outrageous comments that are designed to keep him in the headlines.

If tebow was 6'5 he would have gone 1 overall.
