Downfield Disparity

Ding ding ding. He either reads it late, doesn't trust himself to throw with anticipation, or flat out doesn't trust himself to throw the ball more than 10 yards downfield. At the end of the day, throw it up to TMac and let him draw a flag or make a play. I'd rather see a 20+ yard arm punt than being scared on 3rd down.

Said it in one of the previous BY threads, but his "super power" of being a high processor, if true, is his biggest enemy IMO. He gets so far in his head he doesn't trust himself to just play. He played loose at the end of last year and the return was better. Now he's playing not to lose and is scared to death he's going to mess up...leading to messing up on top of his deficiencies already.

We saw him do it last year...

Hell, we've seen him do it this year, though not as much...

(and not at all last Sunday)

It's extremely confusing.

I think it's a both problem. Bryce cannot throw good, accurate deep balls + DC continues to call plays where every receiver is running 15 yards or less (many times 10 yards or less). I'm tired of seeing play calls where we have an outside receiver running a 12-10 curl and having an inside receiver running an 8 yard out route - just terrible play design and is making life even harder for our awful QB we have

Injuries on the OL would be a likely factor (Hunt is sorely missed).

They've been decent for the most part (especially on the left) but last game everything broke down.

Saints are the first team I (think I) have seen that ran strictly 1 deep or 0 deep safeties the entire game while stacking the box. They were daring us to throw any type of deep route (go, post, corner, etc.) and we only tried it once on that deep throw attempt to XL. The only times I really saw 2 deep safeties were when we were 3rd and 10+

DC made zero adjustments and the Saints did their homework. I fully expect ATL to do the same thing and run primarily 0 or 1 deep safety

Weird thing though is if you were running a typical WCO (for which Bryce is built) you could get away with a low moderate amount of downfield passing and still be effective with other types of throws which Bryce does well.

Didn't see that stuff last game...

It's one of the most baffling questions about Bryce. The last few games of last year showed that he could make those throws and we attributed it to him regaining confidence. All of a sudden he is back to Bryce year 1 and first half of year 2. People keep saying it's his size and stature, well he didn't change his size from last year. I don't know if it's play calling, confidence, reading defenses or what. He has been trash.

Mayfield and Darnold got a lot better after moving to better organizations, if we move on from Bryce and he thrives somewhere then it's the Panthers fault and that is the bigger concern if true.

It's definitely a question to be asked why some players improved after changing teams (Mac Jones w/SF, Jones w/IND, Mayfield w/Bucs, etc.)

There's a lot I don't understand about that.

For one, the kind of attack the Saints threw at us was what I've been expecting all year. Why did it take till now to see it?

But of course, the bigger issue is why Canales didn't seem to have any sort of backup plan in case something like this happened.

Yep, and frustrating as hell to watch 😖

It’s a confidence thing mostly. He’s playing like he was with Reich and before he was benched. Got benched and had nothing to lose and started taking some shots.

Defenses also adjust, think about Arizona where they played soft and he went down the field 3 times. Get an onside kick, have 50 yards to go to win and can’t move the ball because they stiffened up on him.

I’m halfway expecting him to be more aggressive this week due to all the poo talking but it’s not going to matter if he goes back to his old ways in 2 weeks because his confidence is that fragile.

Bryce plays very different when all is already lost. Arizona game, down by 3 scores, it doesnt matter whay he does. When it did matter on that last drive. We saw what happened. He poo the bed.

Last season, we're already out of the playoffs, it doesn't matter what he does because the overall result is already decided. It's easy to play backyard ball like the game doesnt matter when the game really doesnt matter.

You act like he was great throwing deep last year.  It's just not true, he was just better than what we had seen here in awhile.

No one said he was great.

Better? Definitely, which is where the question begins.
