Understandable. Buys us time. 5th year option? All things considered I'm fine with it. A long-term franchise QB contract talks need to be completely off the table though.

Well it depends on the price, if he's willing to get paid like the 20th best QB, I'm fine with a long term contract lol.  But if he wants top 10 or 15 money, nope.

Dan just said a long term contract for BY this year is still an option.

It's the move that makes the most sense.  He gets another year.  If he shows another year of growth and more consistency then you can potentially build a long term deal.

If he doesn't grow, then you haven't committed too much resources to him and the team can still be built up outside of the QB room.

We definitely need a new veteran QB to be a backup and push BY if he isn't playing well.

Exactly where I’m at with it. My only issue is, let’s say he improves to a top ten season next year, he then gets top ten money. Can he stay at a top ten level? That’s where I have trouble giving him an extension.

That is currently Justin Fields at $20 mil. Unfortunately, that isn't realistic.

The contract to watch this offseason is Stroud's. More than likely he will ask for more or similar.

    • In May of 2026, it looks like a challenging schedule...and it probably is.  I rarely listen to the "strength of schedule" conversations that light up social media this time of year. Each year teams improve and decline. I think there's chunks of the year we need to take care of business and the week 5 bye is not desired.  I do think if we don't hit the bye week at 3-1, it's going to be a major uphill battle given the schedule in front of us. This season falls on three people, regardless of schedule strength: Canales, Bryce, Evero.  Canales: Finally can truly coach all aspects of the team and not focus with gameday prep for OC duties anymore. He drives the bus and needs to get these guys in position to win each week. There's no way vets come in and put it on the line every week to watch our QB sh!t the bed (See: SF game last year). Bryce: Despite everyone's obsession with thinking Bryce is a guaranteed extension, I think this year will truly be his "prove it" year. If he comes out the way he has the past three years, I really don't see how vets and coaches can continue to put him under center long-term. He might play out that fifth year as the starter, but I think next offseason his long-term replacement is found. I also think there's no excuses with the weapons and commitment we've made on offense to insulate him with every possible weapon.  Evero: Best personnel he's had since he's been here...no excuses. Figure out how to blitz effectively. Figure out how to use CBs whose strengths are press/man. Figure out how to utilize a talented front-7 to get the hell of the field. Outside of FS and maybe....maybe ILB, there are few weaknesses on this unit.
    • Canales can never get his teams ready in the first week of the season so far. Hope that changes or Ben Johnson is going to take his azz to school.
