Rivera Hitting Road For Newton

We'll get back to updates on the labor situation as soon as there's tangible proof any fan is interested.

But while the big business of football is happening in Washington this week, the football is happening on campuses across America.

This is a big week for pro day workouts, beginning with tomorrow's at Auburn.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera is expected to be there to eyeball QB Cam Newton -- and ostensibly DT Nick Fairley, though he's not thought to be in the mix for the top pick.

Rivera raised more than a few eyebrows with his effusive praise of Newton at the combine, comparing his size and strength to successful QBs such as Ben Roethlisberger, Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco.*

Tuesday, he'll get a first-hand look at Newton again, as the Panthers consider what to do with the first choice in the draft.

*=The term "successful" to be used loosely with Joe Flacco, as he really hasn't done much of anything yet at the NFL level to be considered successful.

32-16 as a starter.

3 years in the league. 3 post season appearances (winning at least a game every year).

Ravens under Flacco also ain't what they were years ago. D has taken steps backwards (but still a good group). Sure he ain't Manning but the kid has had a great career thus far.

I am guessing the defense there had a little to do with those wins, but I think he is a fine QB.

The one I don't get is Sanchez. I think he stinks. A solid QB in NY and they are donning jewelry right now. I guess environment and supporting casts are important. Who would have thought that?

I think Sanchez has a lot of Rex Grossman/Delhomme blood in him. Every couple games he will come out and just abuse you.....the weeks inbetween he needs the rest of the team to get the job done.

Sanchez gets more hate than he deserves. Yeah, he's just a decent QB, but he has shown that he can be clutch as well.

Before the 2009 playoff blowup by Delhomme, he was one of the most clutch Qbs in the game. Yeah he threw some horrible ducks, but he always found a way to win....between the surgery and the Cardinals, Delhomme became a turd.

Imagine you are RonMart (Ron Rivera, Marty Hurney) for a spell, as if that is not all we do here. The Panther's need to take a long look at Newton because his performance in the NFL, whether we take him first or not, is how RonMart will be measured.

Bill Polian is highly respected. Imagine if he took Ryan Leaf over Peyton Manning. Many thought they were even at the time.

Bobby Beathard really had no choice because they picked second. However, his legacy is horribly scarred by the fact that he took Leaf.

Rivera and Hurney's success in this draft will be measured by Cam Newton's career, whether it is here or somewhere else.

I think they better take a good, long look at him. BTW, Gabbert's pro day is tomorrow too.

    • You're assuming just as well.   Morgan and Canales were hired 3 days apart.  I believe it was partially due to their connections in Seattle.  i believe Tepper wanted some familiarity with his GM and HC.  It is so easy to sit back and arm-chair QB over draft picks.  You don't know what the philosophy was going into the 2024 draft.  I believe Canales and Morgan were drafting for the future.  XL and Brooks point to that philosophy. Name me one GM that is 100% on draft picks.  Just one.  You're not going to find one.    I think year one picks weren't for what can you do for me now but Potential.   XL hasn't lived up to the hype of a 1st rounder.  I think we all can agree on that. However, there still is hope he comes around.  What I believe they saw in him was his speed after the catch.  He needs to get more consistent but when he gets the ball you kind of hold your breath just a second because if he gets free, he's gone.  The Brooks pick was a signing for the future, and no one could have guessed he would re-injure the same ACL.  This makes the pick look bad but Dallas was ready to draft him later that same round.  IMO we'll have to see what happens next season before we can call this a bust. Wallace has improved each season and for a third rounder has done well.  Sanders has shown flashes and considering the pick in the 4th round it wasn't a bad pick.  His sophomore season IMO was a little bit more productive.  Smith-Wade has been a good addition and has played well.  For a 5th round pick to get as much playing time as he has.  Most picks below round 3 should take a couple of years to get up to speed.  He's been a decent player.  Crumedy, no comment We turned Barrett into Jackson.  This was an amazing move and basically got a starting CB for a 7th round pick.  Pretty shrewd if you ask me. Coker, maybe the best Free Agent signing of the 2024 draft class. So, in short, you can't say that the draft was a bust.  It isn't a home run but all but one are still on the team and outside of Brooks have made contributions to wins.  2025 draft class has been much better with almost every pick making contributions this season.  Now take Fitterer's two years and compare them to Morgan and tell me that they have the same philosophy.
    • He hasn’t led crap, he’s on loaded teams and a piece of the puzzle. And he’s he has improved drastically but it took the ultimate QB whispers in Shanahan and KOC. You put him on this Panther team and he’s back to normal Darnold
    • Slavin and Jarvis week to week. Florida cheap shots took out our two best players.  I’d start KK so he can beat the brakes off someone.
