What Will Your Reaction Be, If Panthers Decide to Take Newton #1 Before Draft?

Well, at least if we start contract negotiations and he looks like a holdout we can go in a different direction or something.

If there's no CBA there would be no point to this, but if there is, it'd be nice to get things ready so he can get in and start learning ASAP.

Wouldn't be upset, but he's way down my list.

I'm with others that hope it's a smoke screen to get a trading partner. If Newton was the clear cut #1, I'd be more excited. If we didn't draft a QB last year in the 2nd round that has yet to be fully evaluated in a healthy environment (positive coaching staff, better offensive scheme, healthy offensive line and experienced receivers), I'd be more excited. I don't dislike Newton and I think he is the "hot name" around this year's draft that would help attract fans with the flash. I just don't think he's able to contribute for a few years one he gets acclimated to the NFL, and I think we can net more with that #1 if we can trade with someone. I'd much rather swap first rounders with the Bengals for Palmer and draft the BPA at #4 (Peterson, Fairley, Green, Dareus). Palmer upgrades our QB position and is a great mentor to bring Jimmy along. To me, Palmer+BPA at #4 >>> anybody at #1.

Sorry to get so off topic...haha. My reaction would be positive but with some apprehension. I wouldn't feel like we drafted JaMarcus Bust or some crappy player.

I'd be upset.. not with the pick, which I'd be ok with, but with the timing. I'd rather we wait and see how things play out, up until the clock says 0:01.

We could either entertain offers up until a point during the draft for a possible trade. Or we would at least know for certain whether or not we have an NFL next year. If there's no CBA done by the draft, do we hold off on Cam and draft Luck if he comes out next year? Do we pick Cam and hope for the best in 2012? Etc. Etc.

Best strategy is to play the wait and see game imo. I hope Marty thinks this way too.

Not going to happen either wa, even if they work out a deal prior to the draft. If they do it prior then all the attention and discussion turns to the team at #2. They will want to milk the media attention for all its worth and wait until its their time to pick to announce it.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
