Mallett Workout Tuesday

That is proof he got drunk in public. It's a character concern. However, to say that because he got drunk in public he does cocaine is insane... Obviously you investigate it, but come on. It's not proof he does cocaine. The point is, if anyone made "funny" images making fun of Cam Newton's past people would get all ultra sensitive about it, and when we even SUGGEST Cam Newton has character concerns that teams would look into (NOT issues, cause I dont know him just concerns to check out), it ends with people saying I'm assassinating a fine young man's character. FFS.

I am not making the correlation that the because he got arrested for being drunk in public he is also doing cocaine.

I did however answer a person who complained about people ignoring Newtons character while being against Malletts character with no proof. There is proof. Thats all. How you rank being arrested for drunk in public and buying a stolen computer is up to you. But being arrested for being drunk IS a character concern if you are gonna be the face of the franchise and there IS proof. Just like with Newton.

perhaps I'm wrong but I think the "there is no proof" statement related to cocaine use, not to "Mallett has no character concerns at all," since that is the major thing brought up in this thread.

Why is bringing Mallett in not a smoke screen but bringing other quarterbacks in still one? We're doing our due diligence. If in the process we find a guy we like, great. If in the process we make some other team think we're going to take the guy they like, great. Either way, I doubt we take Mallett.

I don't know about this. Haven't noticed anyone going crazy over the poster that has Cam's mug shot as his signature.

Arrested for drunk in public? Nobody cares about that, at least I would hope not. He's a college kid, that's what they do.

If the team's background checks came out okay, and the guy interviews well (understands the game, good on the blackboard etc), then we should consider him, as he can certainly fling the ball around with the best of them.

If you are not wrong then I am wrong

:cheers2:

If I should throw a little more wood in the fire then I actually think there is something about those cocaine claims. BUT I do not have any proof;)

Ugh :(

Hate to tell you guys, but it's not a smokescreen. They're genuinely checking him out, and yes, he's likely in the discussion for the number one pick.

Smokescreens don't happen until you have a solid idea of who you want, and pretty much nobody with any insight believes the Panthers have made that decision yet.

(too early in the process)

I agree. He's definitely worth checking out. I'm not sure I buy into his supposed character issues, at least not what happened at the combine. In a lot of ways, I like him better than Gabbert and Newton. The huddle needs to learn that we'll look into a lot of players. I'm sure Gabbert and perhaps even Locker would get workouts too. They'll at least get long interviews. This is the 1st overall pick, the Panthers aren't just going to throw smokescreens out everywhere. They're going to leave no stone unturned, and that's the way it should be.

I said a long time ago I thought Mallett was the best QB in the draft and I still think he is. Newton might be more of a total threat at some point in his career, but if we could trade down high enough to get Green or Peterson or Dareus and get Mallett with the 2nd round pick then spend the 3rd round pick on whichever side of the ball wasn't addressed with the 1st round pick (TE if was defense, DT if was offense) I would consider it a big win.

His footwork isn't that bad (probably better than the other top prospects) and he most likely has taken more snaps from under center than any of the top prospects. You can see evidence of that in the video jtgreensboro posted. He seems to be the most accurate passer in this draft too. My biggest question is his decision making. That's a hard one to quantify and judge without close examination (which I haven't done). Interception numbers alone aren't good indicators one way or the other. His "statuesque presence" that I hear so much about seems overblown. He may not be nearly as mobile as Newton or Gabbert but I've seen him escape pressure followed by a beautiful throw down field plenty. Most of the best QBs in the league are comparably "statuesque" - Manning, Brady, Brees (and he's even little, at least Mallett is tall and has the excuse of being "lumbering"), Rivers isn't much more mobile. The only top tier QB I would call mobile is Aaron Rodgers.

As to the off-field issues, I've never heard anything substantial to link Mallett to coke. I think that's been the product of an illogical leap from Arkansas QB Matt Jones was a crackhead which MUST mean every Arkansas QB with a hint of character concern MUST be a crackhead. He obviously is no pro at handling the media yet, but honestly he probably hasn't had to deal with any media that wasn't local Arkansas media that had good intentions for him. If people kept asking me about something I already said I wasn't gonna talk about I'd get annoyed too. He WILL be a public figure and will have to fix that issue in the future though.

In summary, nothing substantial to accuse him of being addicted to anything. A single public intoxication violation while in college is insignificant. They'll obviously need to do their homework, but the kid can throw the effin ball. If he checks out off the field, I would easily spend a 2nd round pick on him.

Mallett just kinda feels like a Jeff George or Jay Cutler type to me. Just his attitude or something. May not be a fair comparison but just reading some of his comments just worries me a little.

Dude can spin a football though.
