Yas: Kicking the tires on Cam Newton

In this interview with Colin Cowherd on "The Herd," Atlanta Falcons president Rich McKay says listen.png NFL general managers should view Auburn quarterback Cam Newton as the ultimate research project.

That pretty much goes along with what ESPN draft expert Todd McShay has been saying about how any team seriously interested in drafting Newton should be in his "hip pocket'' right up until the draft.

Obviously, the Carolina Panthers who hold the No. 1 pick in the draft have been doing lots of homework on Newton. As a matter of fact, I'm going to have a column Thursday afternoon in which I'll write about which way I think the Panthers are leaning and what I think they should do with the top pick. Free clue here: My thoughts have changed some in recent weeks.

Who did he have at #1 again? I'm lazy & don't feel like searching :p

Before the combine and workout, I stated that Cam's stock would spike. But as the draft neared, his value would return to form. Now there are more reasons to believe he may have taken money at Auburn. Means nothing, unless he lied to the teams about that. If he did, good luck going in the first round.

I do not see us drafting Cam. Much of what people think is based on the media's love affair with him and Gantt tweeting or writing about every three days that we are going Cam while acting as though Gabbert is a third rounder. He ran his mouth, now he is trying to will it to happen. Last year, he had some people in Boone that told him the Panthers had been up there are few times. So he started pimping AE. This year, I do not think he knows, but he thinks he can will it to happen. He is not a good journalist. There is a fine line between reporting and pretending that your job gives you inside information and wisdom. If the Panthers do not know, and I assure you that they do not, Gantt cannot know. For the past 3-5 weeks he has carried on as if he knew what they were going to do. They do not. Their actions reveal that.

I follow Gantt and in all honersty, I believe he's full of poo. He's acting like he knows everything... In reality, he don't know poo.

Also, Adam Schefter said there is a good chance AJ Green will go number 1 after his conversation with few sources. He said AJ Green is #1 on most teams boards.

And you seem to be under the delusion that if you keep saying it won't happen you can will it not to happen. I don't know what we will do at this point but if he is the only QB we are seriously considering, then I hope like heck we jump on it. I have waited since Collins for us to draft a quarterback in the first. I hope with Fox's departure that we buried the old notion that it is a waste to develop a QB through the draft. Especially when the free agent pickings are often so slim. We got very lucky with Delhomme and can't count on being so lucky like that again.

If picking Newton is a gamble then picking anyone below the first like we did with Clausen last year is even more of a risk given they rarely turn into a franchise QB.

How many of thoseteam's don't have a quarterback. From what I have read, obtaining a quarterback is at the top of many team's list, not a wide receiver. And it surely needs to be at ours. Smitty showed that without a QB it doesn't matter how good you are, someone has to be able to get you the ball. A wide receiver without a quarterback who can get him the ball is a huge waste of a pick.
