If you knew Newton would hit his upside

"potential" isn't a real thing. It doesn't actually help anyone in any way.

With due respect csx all anyone has before they actually play in the NFL is potential. Some become great like Manning and some bust like Russell. But until they actually play all you have to go on is potential.

Potential goes both ways too. You have potential for success and potential for failure.

Andrew Luck isn't rated higher because his potential talent is higher, he just has a lower potential to fail. If that makes sense.

I think he was rated higher becuase people thought he would translate to the NFL better. In other words, more potential for success.

See, it's just such a vague concept and a silly thing to base any debate on.

Fair enough. Most scouts agree that Cam Newtons potential is "astronomical". so whatever that means.

Depends what you think their potential is, obviously.

Some around here and elsewhere think Cam's potential is to revolutionize the game, a quarterback who is just as deadly with his running ability as his passing ability that basically takes the best of Ben, Vick, Freeman, and whoever else and molds them into an elite dual threat who will burn you no matter what you do.

I don't buy into that at all; I think Cam's potential is likely to be a more mobile Big Ben, which isn't really going to revolutionize the game but would make him pretty darn good and if he gets the mental side of the game down as well as he probably can he'd be elite.

On the other hand, Luck's supposedly got Elway-like potential. So who the hell knows.

If you were guaranteed Newton would reach his but not guaranteed Luck would reach his I'd go with who you knew would reach their potential - assuming you actually knew what his potential was.

Maybe Newton's potential is bench-behind-Clausen, which imo is more likely than him revolutionizing the game :(

Luck = brains and football IQ plus ability to deliver great passes

Newton = size and seeming raw athletic ability.

Newton, like Big Ben, will need a great defense to be a good QB in the NFL, but will never be on Peyton Manning's level.

I like Newton and think he has some potentiel. But to say he has the potentiel to revolutionize the game is crap. I'm not a Vick fan, but if his physical talents couldn't do it, Newton isn't going to do it. Not based on his physical talents. Could he have the work ethic and drive greater than Brady/Manning that would allow him to revolutionize the game? I don't have a clue, but based on just his measurements and 40 time, no.

As for Luck Vs. Newton. Does it matter? If they end up being a franshise QB I don't which one we had.

I agree. Culpepper was 6'4, 260 and ran a 4.6 40 and he didn't revolutionize the game. I agree with his size he could be deadly, just don't see him changing the game.

Two things. I am not saying Cam will do that. But you never know.

And secondly, if he doesn't change the game and we have to settle for a McNair (MVP) or a Culpepper (MVP) I will be cool with that.
