Why Jimmy maybe a blessing in disguise...

Now first and foremost: Its way too early to give up on the kid but he was pure-utter-crap last season beyond the lame duck coaching situation...

So basically, there's no way in hell Clausen is starting off next season as our front running QB but at the same time, he will no doubt remain on the team. So, if Shula can really groom a potential top draft pick while a vet like Bulger plays better than expected...Jimmy is going to be sitting there learning, watching, and soaking in the NFL without being thrown to the wolves.

Now, its no doubt going to be hard to sell him as trade bait, but I think he could be a decent backup for us down the road. I am actually more in the position to just keep him as a 2nd-3rd string as long as we can see if our new QB staff seems to be working well. I honestly do not want to see him start for us unless he shows 1) some serious on field leadership improvement and 2) that he can actually pass for over 200 yards.

I like to remain optimistic about him even though I never liked him in college and don't want him as our QB.

What you got??

If we take a QB during the draft Clausen is NOT gonna be on this team for very long, the only thing he could do is get himself trade value.

actually... if we take a QB, Clausen WILL still be on this team..

everyone should fully expect Clausen to stick around for the majority of his contract because that is what you do when you have 3 spots on your roster and spent a 2nd round pick on a QB..

you especially consider what I just said when you pick up a rookie QB the same year you have a coach who reportedly did NOTHING to help Clausen (or other players like Edwards)..

to trade him away when you have 2 backup spots on your roster is extremely short-sighted.. however, being short-sighted is not surprising for fans.

Clausen is a better prospect who you would hope to eventually pan out (even as a backup) than guys like Brian St Pierre, Hunter Cantwell, AJ Feeley, and this can be debated, but I'll throw out Josh McCown as well..

so with those guys mentioned, why are people so quick to toss Clausen into free agency? You really want to cut Clausen and bring back Hunter Cantwell? well, that is what you all are saying...

in the past 3 drafts....a couple of 2nd round QBs have been tossed into the garbage can after one season.

I think it is a fair argument that Jimmy easily was less impressive than those guys. I mean there are reports Jimmy was WORSE in practice.

If Jimmy doesn't fit AND isn't good.....I think it is naive to think he is going to hang around for most of his contract. ESPECIALLY considering he is inherited which is a bad sign for even decent QBs. Recent draft history proves teams will move on quickly from QBs not drafted in round 1......(yet try to make Clausen an exception to that practice)

there will be other options besides BSP etc. Carolina could bring in and make moves for prior to the start of a season. Dumping Clausen doesn't mean we bring in BSP , Cantwell or crap like that. New HCs don't toy around with old crap long and they don't bring it back onto a roster.

considering you won't have any answers for another 3 years on how good/bad Clausen will be.. who are the 2 backups you are going to fill that you would rather have?

it's been reported Fox didn't help Edwards or Clausen.. it's also well known that Fox and his staff are horrible at developing talent. Rip Scherer seems to have hurt our players than help.

So you're saying you would rather have Hunter Cantwell on the team rather than Clausen? now, that's naive in my opinion...

You ARE saying you would rather have BSP, Cantwell and crap like that.. Who else is your 3rd? Teams have either old backups, long out of their prime or undrafted/late round QBs to develop..

otherwise, list names who you would fill if those 2 examples aren't your solutions?

because HCs DO keep crap around long enough when you have a 2nd round pick who was left out hanging last year, a rookie at that, and feels they can develop him into a really good backup...

none of which can be answered in the next 2 years...

so my question is simple.. people who think Clausen will be cut, released in the next year.. who do you bring in?

I doubt Clausen gets traded this year regardless of who we take.

If the new staff doesn't like him, maybe next year to a WCO team that could use a prospect.

I don't think he will be traded either. I honestly don't know if he will play or not but after last year's performance sitting on the bench will improve his trade value.

    • Poster board? Were you trying to use the term poster child?
    • I mean, you're acting like we don't see the tippy-toe bunny hops, jump throws more than normal (with both feet dangling in the air every which a way), and off-platform but off-balance throws that arrive short or sail high. Could that be bad mechanics due to being short? Could a seeming propensity to bail the pocket towards the sidelines early as opposed to sitting in the pocket tall and strong, surveying his reads, be an attempt at trying to see an open throwing lane? I'm not saying that what you're saying isn't a contributing factor to what has been an underwhelming display of executing the QB position, but this is year three, and if the lightbulb hasn't switched on by now---if you haven't figured out that guys are faster, stronger and generally more athletic, then what's it going to take? It's hard to forget that "mental processing" was supposed to be Bryce Young's superpower. Are you telling me that he can't nail down such an easy concept as, "I can't get away with the things I did in college at the pro level," is that right? If he can't get past that, then that surely limits his ability to successfully execute all the other stuff.  Look, I'm not trying to be flippant. I acknowledge that playing pro football is more complex than a lot of fans realize, but all we can do, as fans, is observe. One of my favorite things to do is just look at the greater picture and think what part human nature is playing in the many decisions that are being made or have to be made. You're absolutely correct that fans don't know exactly what's going on, but that is by design, and in many ways it's just the nature of the beast. Some things we can't know. That being said, the professionals screw the hell up all the time. The professionals disagree all the time. These disagreements can be within the same franchise or from franchise to franchise. And sometimes these decisions are all over the place, so excuse me if I ain't exactly buying the I-know-more-than-thee sentiment and that that means that professionals always make better decisions than fans would about certain players. Some of this stuff is simply luck or a crapshoot.
