Colin Cowherd destroying CAR franchise on ESPN radio this AM

I like Colin…. Listen to him just about every day. You don’t have to be an athlete or former player to be in sports talk radio. He is very opinionated, but for the most part he is interesting and not dull and boring like a lot of other sports talk stations.

Colin was not selling Cam stock at first, but after the Gruden fiasco he became a seller on Cam. Basically he had Greg Mcelroy on and a few other people and they were explaining how plays should be second nature to a QB…. The fact the Gruden asked him a simple question and he could not even name 1 play says a lot… Then talked about how Gruden bailed him out, says he’s only had to bail out a few young men during interviews before.

With that, plus he is not insanely accurate, and Colin has always said he does not believe you win as a QB by relying on the run. That’s why he told The Golden Calf of Bristol when he was on on air that he is a great person, but does not believe that will work for him in the NFL. Adding to it he feels that Carolina is a mess…. You are throwing a guy into a situation with no WR’s not a lot of talent, and that’s usually when QB’s fail…. Said he is a seller on Blaine because he will got to Arizona or San Fran where he has top WR’s ect ect……

For all these reasons he believes taking Cam is a horrible move for the franchise that’s why he is bashing us right now….. you may not agree, but all of his points are valid and are not out of line…. Actually a lot of people share this view. Most people say…. I wouldn’t take him, but that’s the pick.

another example of Colin not making sense....b/c he "bought" Vick. The off the field stuff is what made him finally "sell".

All of his rant is predicated on the fact that we are terrible, have little talent and will throw him to the wolves. I don't agree on any of those points. We seriously underacheived last year, we have better talent than we showed last year and Hunrey and Rivera are planning for the future if they draft Newton. I doubt that Chud or Shula would draft him unless they think they can really use him. It isn't like we can't draft Gabbert either if we thought he was best. Seems to me that contrary to popular opinion, that we have vetted everyone and will make a great pick whover that is.

The problem with these rants is that they always make headlines and if Newton does succeed for example, it will be a small footnote that everyone glosses over.

If there is good news in this, there should be tons of blackboard material for the team and Newton couldn't have more reasons to prove all of them wrong. In football that has fueled a lot of players to greatness. Just ask Smitty about that.

Good points. Actually he said if he were Hurney here's what he'd do:

Draft PP. You're going up against 3 potential pro bowl QBs all year long. Now you have a great cover guy to assist defending against these guys.

Focus your mid round draft picks on defensive guys and build up you defense.

We're not going to be very good next year against this division anyways and the other bad teams in league are going to improve.

Boom you have a great shot at Luck next year and now you've got one of the best QB prospects in the last 20yrs and a great D.

All valid points. Sorry folks.

PP is not a great cover guy in zone. PP is not a great cover guy in the NFL playing zone w/ a modest pass rush. Don't need to take a S #1 overall.....team scheme will dictate where PP fits.

trust me I know he only wants to see the big market teams win, he harps on it all the time.

Yes he talks about it a lot, more specifically with basketball and baseball…. He actually believes the competitive balance in the NFL is a good thing. Like I said he was a huge buyer of the Luck to Charlotte and thought that would be good for the franchise, not bad for the NFL…. Now NBA and MLB is a completely different story where he feels a few teams and major markets sell the league.

Cowherd is a successful gimmick. He says things that he knows will annoy people, to better his ratings. He changes his opinions all the time, and knows the more of an ass he is, the more people will listen. Sort of like Rush Limbaugh. Just watch Colin on Sports Nation. You can find him being a hypocrite during any said week. First he says the Celtics have NO shot in the Playoffs then after they swept recently he's all loving them.

People need to put this small market crap to bed. It doesn't mean anything whatsoever. According to the 2010 census, Charlotte is the 17th largest city in the country. Pittsburgh is 59th, and Green Bay isn't even in the top 100. Those franchises are some of the "smaller markets" in the NFL and they haven't had any issues winning Super Bowls. LA is one of the largest markets in the US and they can't keep a team there. Houston is right behind them and they can't buy a playoff win. We were hosting the NFC championship very recently.

Hates Cam at CAR. "Will totally implode at Carolina". We'll lose be 0-7 might not win any games. Blah blah.

Yes it's Colin Cowherd but that seems to be the feeling I get when listening to many pundents around the league - CAR is a small market franchise that has nothing to surround a QB and will throw a poor guy to the wolves and everything implodes. No one has ANY confidence we can develope a QB properly. We're going up against 3 potential Pro Bowl QBs in our division 2x every year. They'll pick us apart etc.

Part of this is b/c most around the league DON'T have respect for us or for alot of small market franchises in general that are fairly new. Part of this might be b/c the scenario I described above sounds familiar though (Clausen last year anyone??)

I believe the way to go is to somehow get some veteran (ANY veteran) that has some experience and let him start. If nothing else throw Clausen back out there so at least he can get another shot and KEEP CAM ON THE BENCH! For those that think we should start CAM immediately you are absolutely out of your mind. Unless you just want to ruin yet another QB you have to let him sit, mature and learn!

Discuss...

Ok in our entire existence name for me a QB we actually developed? The man is right. We got lucky and had a really good team for a couple years but beyond that we have had our issues.

The talking heads though are mad at JR because he kept fox another year and dumped salaries which was the right thing to do.

See my previous post…. Once again the small market stuff is attributed to NBA & MLB not NFL…. He has said the dynamics of the NFL are fine. He talks about Cincinnati Bengals because their ownership is horrific. And the stuff about the NBA and MLB is true… at least ratings have backed up his claims… Big stars + Big markets in those 2 sports sell more than the smaller markets.

Could it be he's right? we won how many games last year? We had a rookie Qb and he sucked so we want to draft another new QB this year. We have a defensive minded coach who hasn't developed a QB before. Our best receiver is wanting to leave, that leaves us with 3 second year players ( edwards basically a rookie) and we are supposed to be good this year? Then our schedule comes out and we are fugged. I mean i usually wear my panther colored glasses too but we are just not that good right now. Here's hoping everything in the universe lines up and we make a huge comeback this year but to be real it might not happen.
