Trade Peppers for Matt Cassell?

How's it going, guys? I'm a Pats fan in Boston, and there has been a lot of talk recently about the possibility of trading Cassel straight-up for Peppers. The general consensus is 99.9% Cassel will be traded this offseason, and there is no way the Pats will keep both him and Brady on the roster.

Having watched every snap Cassel played this year, he is the real deal. People who call him a "system QB" really weren't watching the games...

Look, I understand your "system QB" and your "he had one good year" arguments, I truly do. But would you really, really, rather have a 1st round pick that may or may not pan out to be anything (David Carr? Anyone?) or a QB that you at least seen have a great year, is young, and looks to have a promising future? Did anyone say Steve Young was a system QB when he took over when Montana left, just cause they had 2 good QB's? I mean, he may have been, but maybe it's because he had good coaching and a good vet to watch play.

To me, the chance is worth it. If you get a first from someone, you may get a good player, you may not, but if you take Cassel, and he pans out, you have a QB for 10 years and a good QB in the NFL is priceless. Sometimes you have to take chances.

HOWEVER...if the Pats were to trade Cassel to the Lions for a first-round pick and then include that in a package for Peppers (say, the first from Detroit (from the Cowboys) and a second round pick or so), I think the Panthers would be willing to deal.

Fox/Hurney have a perfect track record of developing their 1st round picks into, at a bare minimum, solid long term starters.

I'll take my chances with that verses a one hit wonder free agent.

Cassel's arm is very strong. Some people were saying he dinked and dunked too much, but that was part of the gameplan. Many teams put a lot of people on the line of scrimmage and blitzed him, so the Pats countered with quick throws in the 5-15 yard range. By the end of the season, teams were backing off more because Cassel got the ball out too quickly making quick reads.

Cassell can't play in a John Fox offense. We don't throw to RBs and TE's much. Fox's offense is based off of running the ball and going downfield off the play action. Cassell struggled going downfield despite having the best deep guy in the league (Moss). He also imo has a lot of Carr's habits. When asked to look downfield he normally gives up and goes mobile if option 1 is immediately open.

      You could say that-- but if we don't need a starting OT this year, why would you draft a flawed one that is not going to play? (We are coming from different underlying assumptions and perspectives--I see your argument and don't disagree with the premise) Your thinking is based on the assumption that an OT for the future is more important than immediate needs at other positions, or that we can meet other needs in later rounds even if we take the OT in round 1.  I do not think there is but 1 OT worthy of a first-round grade---they are mocked based on need and demand--if we do not have a need for a starter right now, a team at 18 may grab a T that is the 33rd best player--worth it if you have no starting T, but not if you have a starter.  So just because they are mocked around the middle of the first it does not mean that the players are good values--teams get desperate.  QBs are a great example.  Simpson may be worth it in round 1 for the Cardinals, but not the Jets, because they have Geno Smith.  Sure, they will need a QB by next year, but taking Simpson is a reach. I do not see our need, with 2 starters (Walker and Moton) and another possibly returning by the end of the season enough to justify ranking OT over positions like Safety, Will LB--I do not think we replaced A Shawn Robinson (We gonna put a NT out there?  Wharton (280lbs)?  So do we reach in round 1 for a player who may not play much or do we get a Will LB that can cover?  A deep free safety?  A quality center? A playmaking TE?  A DT to replace Robinson?  A wide receiver to balance the secondary?  Long term, if the right player was there, you would be right.  Short term, OT is a luxury at this point, in my view.

      We arent switching. Evero is 3-4 to the core. Given how 3-4 has been a noticeable characteristic of top defenses recently and we have drafted and signed players fir it  I dont know why anyone would think that's a good idea
