Rumor about our DTs

Recommended Posts

now im not very knowledgable on the subject, just heard through the grapevine that since we got the DTs Rivera wanted- we would now officially be moving to the 3-4 and putting E.Brown as an OLB.. get his hand out of the dirt and let him play to his strengths..

just what i heard- what do you think?

CJ - Fua - McClain

T.Davis - Conner - Beason - E.Brown

I think your ears have failed you

I don't see Brown being a successful 3-4 OLB.

I think people suggest that as much as anything out of a desire to see him not be a bust.

Still hoping Rivera can do something with him, but at this point it's difficult to deny that he was a pretty big reach of a pick (especially when you factor that we traded up).

Brown is a one dimensional DE....and you need a push from inside (DT) in order for him to legitimately be effective as a pass rusher trying to go around.

The reason Pep and Johnson had success as a one man DL is b/c they have the power to bullrush and go inside....

Brown is a boom or bust pick that depends on DTs getting penetration.....we have gotten no penetration.

The prototypical successful OLBs in a 3-4 are big framed guys like Shawne Merriman, Demarcus Ware, LaMarr Woodley, etc. I really don't see Everette Brown being a successful pass rushing OLB.

Fua is not a starting NT in this league. Maybe in 2 years. We are going to show some 3-4 looks.

Some 3-4 looks is not the same as running the 3-4 as your base defense. Running a 3-4 look on third down will simply replace one of the nose tackles with a linebacker. They will either move the DEs over the tackles or to the outside of the tackles and use the linebackers in coverage if we are playing zone or blitz one up the middle or off the edge and cover with the other 3. It won't be a big departure from what we normally do. The 3-4 just makes blocking assignments for the offense a little harder.

We could also use a 3 linemen look with 3 linebackers and 5 coverage guys when there is a hurry up offense in place or in the 2 minute drill. We also used 3 guys rushing almost exclusively against passing teams like Arizona under Warner a few years ago.

The way McDermott and Rivera run the 4-3, it is actually similar in aggressiveness to a 3-4 with lots of misdirection. So there is really no reason to switch to the 3-4 nor will it offer us any advantages.

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.

    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
