If it comes down to it, Barnidge or Sutton? Who do you pick?

For the sake of the thread, give a roster spot to Hartsock; as it looks like he will be on the roster.

Ok, so I was just running through scenarios of possible roster's that the Panthers could be going with this year; and came up with a few different ones. However, to keep the team balanced and still have quality depth at every position; well...that's where I encountered a problem.

It seems that the Panthers are almost dead set on keeping six wide outs, as the sixth wide out for the Panthers will be a key player on the special teams unit. My guess is either Charly Martin or David Clowney get the sixth spot (I prefer Martin).

Now with the Panthers roster consumed with so many players at wide receiver, running back, fullback, and tight end; it makes it nearly impossible to carry both Barnidge and Sutton (and that's even with sticking Hartsock at the fullback position for depth).

So, here is the layout...

You can have it one of two ways.

6- Wide Receivers

4- Running Backs (Sutton's Side)

3- Tight Ends

1- Fullback

14- Total

OR

6- Wide Receivers

3- Running Backs

4- Tight Ends (Barnidge’s Side)

1 Fullback

14- Total

Here are the pros and cons of each…

Tyrell Sutton

Pros

Give’s the Panthers a ton of depth at the running back position

Has big play capability for a fourth string back

Can be a third or even second sting running back if needed

Can play multiple positions (has experience at fullback)

Cons

Will have a hard time finding the field at the running back position

Is not overwhelmingly good at one thing

Not a huge special team’s asset

Gary Barnidge

Pros

Give’s the Panthers a ton of depth at the tight end position

Has shown promise as a pass catching tight end

Can be a big special team’s asset

Could be a tight end of the future

Cons

Can only play one offensive position (can only play tight end)

Is a one dimensional tight end

Will have a hard time finding the field at the tight end position

So, WHO DO YOU PICK, AND WHY???

Barnidge becasue we got Hartsock as a backup FB (and better blocker) and we got Goodson, Pilares, Edwards to do returns and we got guys like Senn, Barnidge himself, McClain, Pugh, and many others that can play special teams. Also we most likely are going to carry 6 WRs and aren't going to have room for Sutton. Plus Shockey is only a short term solution. Besides, if it comes down to us using a 4th RB this season, RB is one of the most easily replaceable positions in the league.

i'd keep sutton as the 2nd fullback. keep barney too, the guy has ridiculous big-play potential.

But with six wide out's, I don't think we can.

We only had five on the roster last year and that was with a coaching staff that knew who Sutton and Barnidge were.

However, running back and tight end are two positions that the Panthers are pretty solid at now (compared to the wide receiver position). So obviously, you would choose to keep six wide outs instead of four tight ends and four running backs.

TE is now taking on a huge role for us, and although DWill and Stew have their injury concerns, Barnidge is a really solid STer and will provide us another threat should Shockey or Olsen go down..

Stew has proven he can play through injuries, and Goodson has proven he can be a playmaker when he holds onto the ball..
