Whats up with our 3rd down conversions?

Yeah, DD is on it. Nowhere does inexperience at QB shine the brightest. I think, however, that with Cam's running ability keeping the D honest (They used to send 8 at JC regularly), We should improve somen instantly. When Cam starts throwing off his front foot his accuracy will improve, so we will see another jump. When he starts knowing the situation, reading the D and going through progressions, we will be good. I guess it will take 2 years to get good. Until then, Olsen, Shockey, Williams, Smitty, and Stew need to keep us out of third downs.

Last year, we were usually third and 7, not third and 2. big difference.

Here they are. Clausen got in third and long too much, Newton couldn't buy a completion on third down, and Anderson just handed the ball off.

Clausen

3rd and 12, Pick 6

3rd and 5, QB Sack

3rd and 7, 20 yd completion, called back to penalty on Lafell

3rd and 12, 4 yard scramble

3rd and 15, 4 yd completion

Newton

3rd and 8, incomplete pass

3rd and 7, incomplete pass

3rd and 10, incomplete pass

3rd and 4, incomplete pass

3rd and 2, incomplete pass

3rd and 8, 7 yd completion

Anderson

3rd and 1, 1 yard rush (Vaughn)

3rd and 14, 4 yard run (Sutton)

3rd and 8, took a knee

it was the 1st preseason game for an extremely young group of QBs tryin to get on the same page with a group of random receivers changing every QTR (roughly).

I mean, is this a serious question?

This.

Silly thread.

People with lack of football common sense need not post silly poo.

3rd down and moving the offense in general was a big problem for Clausen all of last year (and he has the same group of WRs that he had all of last season overall).......I wouldn't say it is silly. It is something to watch for...

It seems that Chud and co are working mostly on the passing game. Wise since the running game is what is it ( auch ).

I think we ran the ball 4-5 times in the game while Cam was in it. So we often ended up with 3rd and long. I think our average 3 down was 8,8 yds. You could also see it in the way Cam was clearly was told not to run but throw the ball. On a 3rd and two we went down the field. That would be a 3rd down made for Cam.

So the poor 3rd down % was mostly because of learning a new O and concetrating on some things and not the ones we know are working.

    • Ppl want to trade Melo? Am I wrong for thinking that would be a bad idea?
    • Some of you act like one can't learn from experience over time. Just because you may not know what you're doing in 2018 doesn't mean that you don't know what you're doing in 2025. Frankly, you grow from experience, and success and excellence gives first-time applicants the hand probably 99.999% of the time.
    • It's an interesting topic of conversation as sports evolves. I think ultimately it would lead to a number of small market franchises folding though. Especially in the NBA where there are so many bad teams that have been bad for years and years in some cases already. But as it stands I think athlete pay draft or no draft aside has reached a point where we can and should realistically ask should they make that much compared to the average person. Now college athletes is a different conversation but even that reaches a breaking point. But we could go down the rabbit hole on this even further into overall entertainment and talk about actors making absurd sums too. In the end I think in sports the powers that be won't allow these changes to even be considered because it opens the door for so many other variables. But who knows how long sports like football will realistically be around after people like us pass on. We're only just now learning about things like CTE which the league and the sport in general will only be able to run away from for so long. As far as the NBA goes my understanding is viewership has been steadily going down for a number of reasons but one crucial aspect is key players missing so many games. The NBA has to figure that out regardless. Especially when considering fans who pay to see these athletes compete in person. But hey I guess let's just try to appreciate what we've got while it still exists in this form eh?
