Our Defense is Awful..

What are we going to do, our Defense is just plain ugly. I realize Beason is out, and while I think he is great player I have major concerns on how we are going to fix this.

We can never get off the field, we get absolutely no push at all. I am so sick of everyone saying how we need to cut Armanti or Jimmy. We need to can our entire defense, I mean seriously, did anyone watch the Bungles deystroy us last week, and we couldn't stop the great Charlie Batch this week.

While I think we will be much better on O, with the new TE weapons and a competent QB, the defense just can't get off the field.

5-11 at best, this sucks.

You could say the same thing about Pittsburgh last night. They didn't look great either and we all know that they are one of the best in the league. It is preseason and we are still installing our blitz packages. Lets wait until the bye to see what we have. This is a new system and players need time and reps until they do things without thinking. We will start off slow and struggle at first just like we did when Meeks installed his defense a few years ago. But with Rivera being a defensive guru I really doubt it stays this bad for long.

everyone relax. Aside from the first preseason game we have been running a very vanilla system.

You will see the D open up in week one with much more pressure.

I hope you are right, but what I see right now is crap like Cedric Benson / Isaac Redmen slamming it down our thoat, and Andy Dalton / Charlie Batch picking our secondary apart.

Those aren't good things to see, while I felt better about what Cam did last night against the Steelers first team D, we have been just awful.

the steelers rested a lot of their starters on both sides of the ball.

it was nice to see carolina's offense move the ball, but that wasn't the first string defense they were up against.

like i've said in the past, carolina's defense will be the team's achilles this season. the defense didn't look bad when meeks installed a new system...this defense has personell issues, not issues with a new system.

okay, well if you want to make an exception for the Steelers b/c they sat Troy......how come the fact a 3rd string MLB was in for Carolina?

Pointless to nitpick who is in....overall that was a first string D of a very good D.

Meeks' system is nothing compared to what they are trying to install. Meeks system was noted as being much more simplistic than the prior DC.

Let hope we can upgrade DT and cb claiming someone off waivers.I think Riveria is doing everything he can to upgrade the DT spot. The guy from Seattle was cut after a week.It will all come down to who becomes availile.I doubt a good DT will be cut though...better shot getting a cb

Same goes for offense....Better chance of upgrading a number 2 wr than what I feel will be avaiible at guard or tackle but we will more than likely be able to upgrade the position at guard given who we have.

I saw Florio made a similar snide comment about it being mostly, if not all, backups for Pittsburgh. As far as I could tell, the only starters they sat were Polomalu and Harrison. I still saw Timmons, Woodley, McFadden, Clark, Taylor, most if not all starting 3 of their DL. The only other starter I didn't see was Farrior, but he was probably just scared of getting choke slammed by Stewart again.

It's true we need some vets in the middle of the D line but unlike you guys I saw lots of improvement in the D last night. Our line just fell apart aganst the Bengals and we were pretty well geting blown of the LOS. Last night we held our points much better but were still getting driven back after contact on the running plays.

Our coverage was loose in the first series but we were making the recievers pay for it and in the second series we tighten the coverage up a bit.

Overall we scored as much as them in the first half and TOP was even. Much better than at Cinncy.

    • We've got another viral Panthers song The dab is back Jags Week 1, Ohio State National Title, JLo got divorced...   Nature is healing, it's Super Bowl time
    • Its too late for that.  Time has run out.  You dont give him a ext if he plays "decent".  He played "decent" at the end of last year and look what happened.
    • I’m not necessarily advocating sticking with Bryce. His highs show the ability is there, but there’s enough bad film out there to doubt that he can consistently enough play at a high enough level. But this video from Brett Kollman is a pretty good argument to give it a bit more time, whether that be rolling with Bryce just next year or picking up his 5th year option (not extending him).      The gist is that the structural (wider hashes) and rule (3 yd vs 1 yd thresholds for intelligible offensive lineman downfield penalties) differences in the college and NFL have led to wildly different play calling and scheme diets in college. There is much more shotgun and RPO calls in college and screen/quick throws. This simply doesn’t set up young QBs to be able to play under center, which is more preferred in the NFL due to RBs being able to more effectively run out of that formation.  They don’t know how to do it and have to learn. Yes, the NFL has trended more toward college style offense in the last decade or so, but it isn’t that pronounced and is more out of necessity than desire. And on top of all that, they ask the young QBs to do all this learning with coaching and other personnel churn going on around them.  Bad results lead to coaches getting fired and new ones with different ideas on scheme and footwork and different terminology and playbooks coming in. It makes it harder on those young QBs to learn.     So we may drop Bryce for a young QB starter in the draft and be in a similar situation. With a QB who is going to take years to learn how to operate in an NFL style offense and will struggle along the way.  So you have to weigh whether the struggles we see from Bryce are more due to this learning process vs solely physical limitations on his part. It’s almost undoubtedly a bit of both, but the answer to that question I think dictates your strategy at QB over the next few years. And of course, you have to consider what the alternatives available are.    I’m neither a Bryce hater or a Bryce Stan and I don’t have an answer to that question. But I do fear that if we move on from him, unless it’s for an established player, we’re just in for continued frustration on the QB front because it’s going to take a few years for a college QB to develop (Drake Maye’s don’t grow on trees).
