Rams release Torry Holt

Well. here's an odd something or other.

Three teams that could each use a decent receiver - specifically, the Eagles, Giants and Vikings - have all stated to local press that they have no interest in signing Holt.

Granted, these may not necessarily be official statements. After all, Chandler's take isn't based on any actual team pronouncement, just his read on how the team feels and acts. Still, in two cases (Eagles, Giants) the reports cite "team sources".

I think Moose's age will catch up to him this year...and we'll see a noticeable drop in his stats/playing time. Jarrett will step up in a big way - he's ready. I wouldn't count on the Panthers signing another reciever this offseason, or even drafting one for that matter. Of course we'll have the usual training camp no-names that might show a few bright spots, but between Smith, Moose, Jarrett, and Robinson, I think the WR corps are pretty solid. I would feel more comfortable bringing back Mark Jones...just as insurance if anything. Best return man we've had in a good while.

So to sum up, we are definently not going to sign Torry Holt. It just doesn't make sense $$ wise or based on the talent already on the roster.

Whose career has Carolina ruined?

I'm sorry, I didn't mean it like that. I meant to say that Fox is so loyal to his players that we let great talent just sit on the bench for years before given an opportunity. Unless we need a position filled immediately, Fox will not play a rookie.

Only 3 can come to mind right now ... DeAngelo Williams, Richard Marshall, and Dwayne Jarrett

jarrett's situation was handled correctly.

jarrett's work ethic was pathetic and he was lazy and egocentric to a fault. all he wanted to do was just go out and do his thing...throw me the ball where ever i am so i can catch it. he didn't want to block or anything. he didn't deserve a roster spot or to be active his rookie year.

going into last year he turned it all around and started working his butt off. they picked up hackett based on jarrett's past with them and unreliability. they wanted that WR2/3 option and were going to have it one way or the other. jarrett had to prove himself and he did by sticking with it and making the most of every opportunity he had.

the result of his hard work is that he has a roster spot and hackett does not. this year we will see a lot more from him because he will be given more opportunities based on his hard work.

marshall had to grow into the spot and until this past year didn't really make that great of a case for him to supplant lucas or gamble on the depth chart. he was a great nickel back and provided a great service to the team in that capacity. it is a spot we needed someone good in and we had that. it isn't like he was relegated to the bench for most of the season or his time here. he got plenty of snaps.

williams....there was a problem. he should have been ahead of foster. foster worked hard to keep his spot but he had a low ceiling. i still don't think that we would have been getting that same production from williams every year prior to last year. he wasn't really ready to be the #1 guy until this past year. the talk with vinny changed his work habit and that pushed him over the top. he was better than foster but wasn't ready for the RB1 gig.

Very great points. I definitely agree with your argument about Jarett. However, I really felt DeAngelo was ready to take on the #1 RB role after his rookie year. Everytime he was given an opportunity, he capitalized. He averaged 5.0+ ypc his first 2 years, while Foster barely broke the 4.0ypc plateau.

RB is one of the very few positions where a rookie can make a significant impact. IF you look around the league, I don't see any RB's drafted in the first round not starting. It took Fox 3 years to realize he was the guy, and to be quite honest, that's way too long for a stud like Williams.

Jarrett's been addressed. Marshall was behind established starters, and add in that he's been sometimes a bit less than perfect in his nickel and ST duty (at least under the old scheme).

As to Williams, while a lot of folks (me included) wanted to see him take the reins sooner, Williams himself has said that the game didn't really slow down for him until last year. It may turn out that taking the cautious approach with him may prove to be the best long term choice.

There are certainly rookies that succeed from early on, but there are also plenty that don't, but conceivably could have given more transition time.

To put it another way, for every Jon Beason, there's a Keary Colbert.

if money wasn't an issue than of course all of you would say yes... you'd be crazy not to. the fact that we would have an incredible number of decent WRs isn't an argument against signing HOLT. hell, bring'em into camp, and then at the end of camp keep the top 5 receivers... WRs are a dime a dozen, HOF wrs are once in a while occurrence; TWO HOF (smitty potentially) WRs on one team is EXCEPTIONAL!

i was hoping for williams to start earlier as well and, like i said, he would have been better but we wouldn't have seen a performance like this past year's until this past year. like mr. scot said, williams noticed the game slowing down this past year. i don't think that would have happened until it did.

i do think that had he started he would have played at the level that stewart did which was still better than we had with foster by a long ways.
