Jon Gruden: Cam Newton Induced "Shock and Awe"

Let's be honest, Gruden meant to put Cam on the spot with the play call... it made for good TV which is why it ended up as part of the 2 mins out of a total of 4 or 5 hours of conversation. Gruden is no fool, he knew darn well the kind of offense Cam was running at Auburn.

The fools are the ones who concluded that Cam was not smart enough to learn an NFL offense based on that play call. If you know anything about Gus Malzahn's offense, you know the play calling is kept simple to speed things up.... same reason Cam was never asked to huddle.

The real irony is that I think you will start seeing NFL offenses adopt this same approach over the next few years in terms of the no-huddle rapid play calling to put the defense on it's heels, prevent substitutions, etc, much in the same way the NFL has adopted the spread offense.

A lot of Gruden's questions on that show, he may already know the answer to it, and he may know that the player knows the answer to the question to it, and he may know that the answer may not be flattering for that player.

But when he asks the question he is looking more for how the player responds to the tough question than the answer itself. Does he make excuses, deflect blame, get defensive, etc.

plus it is good TV :)

no offense but you aren't a super bowl winning head coach. not to be a dick, but no one really cares what you say.... in comparison to a Jon Gruden, someone who actually has football credentials.

Nope, definitely haven't won a Super Bowl... But it is validating.

No one can take it from me. Now, if u don't mind... I'm taking my ball and going to bed... See u homo's tomorrow.

    • My read is they intended to try and get points but that first run and usage of the clock was done to hedge against things going poorly. Basically they shouldn't need all that time to score since they had multiple timeouts. Dirting that second play put us in a no-win situation. Sure you can run on 3rd down but ARI had timeouts so they still likely get the same result.
    • Anyone catch Adam archuletta referring to him as a “young qb” like bitch this is year three players are in the Super Bowl by now.
    • I never said he had a good game in the Denver game.  As you said we had a good first drive ending in Bryce throwing a slant to XL for a TD.  It was garbage time but the back shoulder throw to Coker for the late TD was a great throw.   Throws like these in bad games are why I say he "can" do it and has the physical tools.  The question is can he do it consistently, continue to improve, grow and become our QB of the future.  Up to this point that was a hard no but with a new head coach and Bryce in his 2nd year it was 100% the right call to play out the year and see if he got better.  He did.   Two games into this year is still more of the up and down quality of play and coaching but there is still plenty of potential and we have 16 more games to decide if it's worth it to continue down this path. I don't know what will happen but I know cutting him or benching him now makes zero sense on any level. I said of those last 10 games we were only blown out in 2 of them.  I'll concede the Denver game was a blow out.  So 3 blowout loses and 7 competitive games, 4 of which we won, all decided by less than a TD.  Sounds like a team growing, improving and getting better.  All I want to do is see where that leads and if those examples of starting NFL level quarterbacking can continue to improve and become more consistent.   Anyone with pride would retire?  Laughable.  Do all of you quit in your daily lives every time things get tough or don't go your way?
