Ron Meeks vs Sean Mcdermott

I don't think you can honestly evaluate a defense that has only had 7 weeks of offseason and is missing its two best players. McDermott/Rivera's system is much more complicated than the one Meeks ran, so it's going to take at least another year before we can really look at it in earnest.

I know a lot of people hate coming to grips with this because they think we're one starter away from being 7-1 and contending for the superbowl this year but the defense would have to overcome injuries to two of its best players and its 1 tech, no OTAs, no minicamp, a very limited time frame overall to institute the defensive scheme, and no major signings from other teams.

You could bring up why is the offense doing well, ....well it's because Shockey, Olsen, and Naanee (lol) have experience in AC and know the system. Williams and Smith also worked with Henning before, so they understand AC as well, although Smith probably knows it better. Other starters on the offense that have been here with Henning include Jordan Gross, Travelle Wharton, and Geoff Hangartner. Couple that with the enormous workload Cam Newton took on learning the offense and refining his footwork and fundamentals.

On the defense, the average age is much younger and the only person in there that has worked with McDermott previously is Omar Gaither. Applewhite makes plays in our 3-4 package why? I don't know maybe it's because he knows that fuging system. As far as individual performance is concerned, Anderson is coming along and getting better playing in this defense every week. So are the safeties. Hardy looks like he's as good as he's gonna be this year, and Johnson is a monster regardless. The liabilities are Dan Connor and our rookie DTs, which coincidentally make up the center of the defense. Dan is good but he's way too fuging slow compared to Beason and our rookies, well I wouldn't count on both of them making strides in improvement from this year to next. I'm leaning more toward McClain developing into a starter than Fua. The defensive line needs to be addressed early in the next draft, where we'll also have to find Davis' replacement. People think we should draft a corner but with more consistent pressure QBs will make mistakes and the secondary we have now is good enough to capitalize on them.

Im hoping with beason back next year things will change, iv noticed Connor sprinting into holes hoping to geuss right or standing on his feet and is too slow to make up the ground, but when he does geuss right he stops them.

and williams gives up to many stupid penalties, with davis history im hoping we find a good replacement next year

I just feel with this system it req good CBs, i love our CBs and Safteys for coverage but for playmaking ability i just don't see it

also, when meeks came in we changed from a cover2 to a tampa2...kind of. overall not a huge difference, esp. with john fox sticking his fingers in the defense the way he did.

moving from a tampa 2 to a jim johnson 4-3 is a much bigger shift.

McD was horrible with philly last year as well I'm more than happy to give him a 2nd year in this system before I call him out, but still it makes you wonder if it really is the DC as to why we are so bad on defense

GO back and look at the linebacker corps for Philly when McDermott was there in 2009-2010. He seems snakebitten on linebacker injuries. He comes here hoping to have a great linebacking group in place and suddenly he loses 2 of his starting 3. McDermott's system is predicated on great linebacker talent. Without it he has to dial back the pressure and this is what you get. If Davis and Beason were in there as expected, this defense is significantly better. Where we are getting killed is poor linebacker play in the short drops and bad run fits particularly on the edges. Remember that with Meeks, Rivera, and McDermott, there is no shortage of defensive coaching ability.

I would like to see the stats Meek's defense would have had with this offense.

Keep in mind it cuts both ways. Because we are usually ahead or tied in the second half going into the fourth quarter, other teams are pressing on offense and scoring points and yards. Last year we were so far out of it by the fourth quarter, other offenses were running the clock and had let up on the gas. Last's year's defense would have looked even worse if other teams were trying to score like they are this year.

players were excited and enjoyed playing in meeks's system. they talked about it all the time. you got the feeling that under meeks they were comfortable and their assigned responsibilities were tailor made just for them. they were playing with the system like it was their new favorite toy. this was the general consensus from day one.

how much influence fox had is irrelevant. the players were happy.

no one is saying poo about mcdermott's style of defense...and that worries me.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
