Panthers Cap figure for 2012. Pat Yasinskas

If we want someone we will get them. Contracts in the NFL are worth about as much as the paper there printed on. The Redskins and Raiders give stupid contracts every year and never suffer for it.

I'm guessing you don't mean play on the field. Although Raiders were better then normal this year.

It's because the Panthers are no longer all that tight against the salary cap. According to contract numbers obtained by ESPN.com, the Panthers recently were given about $2.5 million in cap room as credit for bonus pro-rations that were already paid.

The Panthers received a credit of $1.625 million for part of a bonus that was paid to running back Jonathan Stewart in 2009. They also got a credit of $937,500 for a bonus that was paid to tackle Jeff Otah that same year.

The Panthers currently are sitting about $3.4 million under this year’s cap.

this was from 12-7 so that may have changed.

re: the $1.5mil allowed to borrow to help pay for re-signing vets, part of the deal to help with the transition to the new cba was allowing for, in 2011, $3.5mil to be borrowed from a future year (the way i understand it now, it doesn't necessarily have to be from the following year). the 2012 season was supposed to get the same kind of deal, just with 1.5 instead of the 3.5. that isn't a permanent part of the cba.

The only cap casualty candidates that I see on the roster are Wharton and Davis. Everyone else that has a big contract still has too much guaranteed money coming their way.

Yeah, most of the big contracts are all recent or are structured in a way that wouldn't offer you any real savings in cutting them. Even Davis would have a large dead money cap hit due to his recent signing bonus if cut.

Steve Smith and Wharton are the only contracts that would give sizeable savings and I don't see Smitty going anywhere.

The cap will work out with no problems. This is what Hurney gets paid for. I love folks on here who worry as if it their money. We have always had the money to sign who we want and will next year. It isn't like we need big bucks to sign a bunch of free agents next year. Our cap is one of the biggest but we have one of the highest number of guys inked to long term deals. Wait until New Orleans resigns Brees and Coulston and their other free agents. They will instantly have a higher total than we do and still have fewer folks under contract. 22 of 24 starters are locked up long-term. We are actually in better shape than a lot of other teams.

I think these are the only guys, IMO, that are locks to be here next season. Thats a pretty good core. If you think this is going to be a quiet offseason, think again. I see a lot of changes.

if you want to move forward with basically the same team and starters then yeah, we are in a good spot because we have just about all of them locked up under contract

if you want some changes to be be made by replacing/upgrading starters through free agency then no, we're not in a good spot

we don't really need a lot of cap space because we have so much locked up long term.

the "tight" spot we have as far as cap room isn't going to have that much of an impact long term. we just have to get enough to help us get through until the new tv deal hits.

next year is the only year i really see us having a hard time at all with the cap, but even then it won't be as bad as people think. they can manage it well enough to get most of what we need to make us competitive next year and to be playoff contenders.

like i said, the feeling is, contracts are going to be smaller next year around the league and for shorter periods of time (largely 1 year deals).

we are about $3.4 mil under the cap this year and that space will roll over to next year (thanks to the new CBA).

we will also be able to borrow a couple million against the following years cap to help re-sign vets (again, thanks to the CBA).

there is also talk that this will be a buyers market this year and that most layers looking for new deals will have to settle for a smaller amount of money and a one year deal as teams are wanting to wait until the new tv deal begins in 2013.

also, some contracts will be restructured providing a little extra room.

don't look for the sky to fall yet. the cap won't have the impact many of you think it will. we won't be able to go spend crazy, but we also won't be paupers.

random thought.. if teams unused cap space rolls over, does that imply the amount that rolls over will roll over again should it go unused?

if all unused cap continues to roll over, what's the limit? people can save up cap for 5 years and then buy a team? (hypothetically)
