Tired of the Kirkpatrick hype.

in more cases than not it's extremely hard to project how well a college prospect can do in the NFL, even if they show more than enough competency at their position in the collegiate level. This ignores many aspects of the game and way too many people overemphasize what they do in college to the point it sets them up for some big surprises.

Based on his college production Cam Newton didn't project well into the NFL at all because people had the perception that, first and foremost, he was just a read-option QB. They never factored in other things like how bad he wanted to be successful and how hard he would work to improve himself as a player. I can't find a rookie QB since Peyton Manning that threw more touchdown passes than he did, and he produced 21 while rushing for an additional 14.

Meanwhile, Patrick Peterson was regarded by many as one of the most polished prospects in the entire draft. He was sizeable, competent, and at times, dominant at LSU. He struggled mightily his rookie season.

A lot of people forget that conditioning, agility, intelligence, and work ethic, to name a few are also very important factors in drafting players. Coaches, GMs, and scouts know how to measure this better than anybody else. Amateurs are the ones who nitpick on the basics.

I base my opinion on most mocks and peoples' opinions have him going top 10 and based on what (limited) of his game I've seen I don't think he'll be a starting NFL CB worthy of a pick that high. I don't hate him or think he's garbage, I just don't see him being better than Minnifield or 2 or 3 other CBs that could possibly be had in the 2nd.

We have great tacklers. We need penetrators and disrupters

This can't be stated enough.

Whether that player is on the defensive line, linebacker, or secondary is irrelevant.

We need a player who can turn the ball over and get the ball into our ridiculous offense on a short field.

Is Kirkpatrick that guy? I have no idea, haven't seen enough of him to know. I just want someone with a proven track record of screwing up offensive game plans and disrupting what the other team wants to do.

This is why i would rather go with Brockers or Upshaw.

agreed.. with how potent offenses have become, I think people will start seeing more emphasis on turnovers than an overall dominant defense...

I'm not saying that's better. But if teams start putting more money into their offense, then I think the natural balance will be a defense may be asked for more turnovers than overall yards, and to an extent overall points...

I really don't foresee Rivera ignoring an overall shutdown defense. He's done it elsewhere, I imagine he's going to do his best to accomplish that here.
