Why Not Draft a WR?

we had the worst D in the league but one of the best offenses in the league so we go......offense?

just as bad as the idea of picking defense last year with the first overall after having the worst offense in the league.

So you automatically pick a player who is essentially scouted to be a lesser talent merely because it's not the side of the ball you need?

Smith is a game changing WR, but is in the twilight of his career. LaFell has looked like a solid possession receiver.

Naanee is a FA, Gettis had a decent rookie year, but with the previous coaching staff and has had a major knee injury ending his season. Shockey is a FA.

We could end up with Smith, LaFell and Olsen as our only recognised receivers.

You just can't rule it out, if the right player is there. Especially considering first round DTs are...not exactly guaranteed to play well in their first year.

and your defense would still suck.

aside from elite talents like blackmon and kalil, there really isn't any offensive player that would be worth passing up a top defensive pick, imo.

Not nec.

We've got a lot of players experience this year and a heck of a lot of players were in their rookie or sophomore years. We should see at least one or two make progress into being legitimate starter material.

However I am not looking at it from that point of view. Rivera and co have made numerous comments about adapting to the league and how its about scoring points that keeps you as a perennial contender.

If you can keep up a playmaker, then you basically can ignore offense for the next 1-2 drafts. Considering we were winning at the half in virtually all our games this year, I can see our FO looking at ensuring our offense can continue to control games.

I am not writing any position off bar the obvious and I am certainly not going to mock or think anyone is idiotic if they think we could take a WR. No one knows what will happen between now and the draft.

    • No one way to do it, it does appear that with the bigger draft picks of the last 5 years…..majority haven’t steered clear of young QBs on the roster being their hopeful guy. Especially past their rookie seasons but even some the biggest ones have had it early.   As far as Andy Dalton, the two young guys he has “mentored”…..have had very rough NFL starts.  Which really ask the why the heck is Dalton here.   He doesn’t really check any box.  No young potential.  Can’t step in and win.  And his mentor track record with Fields and now Bryce is bad
    • I had thought the Panthers might let him play out his contract this year and hope he stays healthy. If not draft a left tackle and move Ekwonu to right tackle.
    • Frankly, if most teams in the NFL lose their starting QB for a significant amount of time, they're screwed. The fantasy is that one has a future Tony Romo or a Nick Foles that can carry a stacked team. The reality is that you might get roughly 3~5 games out of your backup before it all falls apart. Remember all of Peyton Manning's backups? Utterly terrible. Speaking of backup QB's, Raiders may need one. https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-qb-aidan-o-connell-suffered-fractured-wrist-in-preseason-finale-expected-to-be-out-6-8-weeks
